Nature is nothing that should ever be messed with; it is powerful and has a mind of its own. You never know where or when mother nature is going to disrupt what was once normal and put it on its head. We’ve seen it time and time again.
Whether it’s floods, tornados, hurricanes, or tsunamis — nature is absolutely fierce. Another amazing thing about this living planet? The creatures that live on it are incredible at adapting to change.
The salmon in the video below are prime examples of animals, in this case, a fish, adapting to their surroundings. In this situation — the massive fish had to adapt within just a few moments, all because their entire environment changed in an instant.
In an area near Seattle, torrential rains had caused the nearby river to burst its banks — flooding fields and roads.
Migrating salmon happened to be swimming in the river at the time that it burst. The salmon needed to head upstream in order to spawn.
A salmon’s life is spent living in the ocean until they need to have their babies. It’s at this moment when the salmon will swim from the ocean, upriver, seeking lower flow streams to spawn, and then die.
When the river burst, it completely disrupted the salmon’s migration causing the first to be swept over the river banks with the flood waters.
However, these fish are intelligent and determined creatures — they weren’t going to let mother nature stop them from fulfilling their life cycle.
Even though the river was flooding over the roads — the salmon were going to swim up and over the road through the floodwaters.
It’s absolutely incredible to watch the salmon make their way from the floodplains onto an asphalt road with only a couple of inches for them to swim through. They are used to swimming over fish ladders but not a concrete road.
The giant fish are bound to follow the river, no matter the obstacle — even if that obstacle is a man-made road.
The salmon jump up and onto the road as they furiously flap their tails to writhe their way to the opposite side of the road where the main river flow once was.
It’s an impressive sight to behold and it’s just incredible to see nature overcome and adapt.
We hope that the salmon in this video made it to their spawning grounds safely!
