Russia is an amazing yet interesting country. It’s incredible but at the same time, somewhat odd. The people there are very nice and hospitable but when it comes to fashion, they’re known for pushing boundaries. That’s why a lot of folks use the term, “Only in Russia.”
Even marketing strategies are over the top.
In Samara, Russia, the Olvi gas station came up with an innovative idea. The goal was to bring more attention to the business. In the world of marketing, there’s no such thing as bad publicity although this idea makes you wonder if that’s true.
Free gas in exchange for showing up in a bikini.
Why not? Having girls strut their stuff wearing small swimsuits while filling up their cars with gas, what could possibly go wrong. The problem…the individuals behind the publicity stunt failed to limit the offer to only women. You guessed it, men showed up in bikinis as well.
A generous offer that went a bit too far.
The offer for free gas only lasted three hours. But during that time, the station was flooded with both genders wearing all sorts of different bikinis. To complete the look, many of the men also wore their most fashionable high heels. People scrambled to snap a photo to share for the world’s enjoyment (and laughter).
People went crazy trying to capture photos.
There were a lot of people whipping out their phones to snap photos. After all, it’s not every day you see men walking around a gas station dressed in their finest swimwear. Well, maybe in Russia. For some onlookers, the funniest part was watching the men in heels trying not to fall on their way inside the gas station to have their vouchers validated.
It might’ve been unconventional…but it worked.
Although this wasn’t what the Olvi gas station anticipated, the results were fantastic. Along with the men and women who showed up for free fuel, the sight of bikinis everywhere drew in paying customers. As the saying goes, “Only in Russia.”
Photos and videos went viral on the internet.
As soon as people started uploading photos and videos of the event, online users went wild. One poster commented, “These hot bodies are a fire hazard!” Another wrote, “They had to come in a group to get fuel for their tanks, with the Soviet anthem playing in the background.” Whether Olvi gas or a different station plans to do another event like this remains a mystery. But if they do, it’ll sure get the attention they want.
A little ingenuity can go a long way.
You have to give it to this gas station for thinking outside of the box. You also have to give the owners kudos for supporting what would’ve been a “nice” event that turned into something “extraordinary.”
If you plan to travel to Russia, expect people there to treat you kindly. But also keep your eyes peeled. You may luck out and see another remarkable offer under way. You never know.
