Krystal Woodward, the owner and operator of Pinky Paws Search and ResQ, received a call about an abandoned dog on a country road.

The dog was stranded next to a pretty busy road so Krystal and her husband set out to help the stray.

A team sets out on a mission of love

When the dog-saving duo finally located the dog they realized the situation was much worse than they initially thought. Right next to the poor stray canine, was the body of another dog who had recently died. The two humans were taken with sadness at the sight.

It may seem weird that the living stray, now nicknamed Ziggy, was sticking next to the dead body, and Krystal commented on that in her interview.

โ€œA lot of times dogs will do that, and theyโ€™ll stay devoted. Iโ€™m not sure if theyโ€™re hoping that theyโ€™ll come back to life or notโ€ Krystal explained.

But Krystal realized rather quickly that there was another problem that the two were facing. Ziggy was terrified of people. The poor girl had just lost a friend, but also looked as though she had dealt with a measurable amount of abuse in the past.

The poor pooch wasnโ€™t looking too good

Abused dogs are normally either terrified or very defensive around humans. Ziggy was terrified and traumatized.

Krystal tried to explain the dilemma that the rescue team was faced with:

โ€œWe knew we had to be careful because it was a very busy street. Lots of traffic and semis and the dog was really traumatized from that.โ€

Their biggest focus was trying to get the dog out of the bad situation. After a few minutes of thinking, they devised a plan. Krystalโ€™s husband constructed a trap with some hamburgers and mounted a camera near the spot they had seen the dog. Then, they waited.

The dog kept trying to trigger the trap without actually getting caught.

Needless to say, Ziggy knew what she was doing.

โ€œThat is really really smart. We were on edge watching the camera taking turns, me and my husband. Ziggy, finally triggered the trap and it took 12 hours.โ€

Phase two of the plan begins

Catching the stray was only the beginning of the plan. Krystal knew that they needed to quickly get their canine friend to a veterinarian for care.

They took Ziggy for what seemed like her first doctorโ€™s appointment, and the state of the pooch when they took her in was rough, to say the least.

Both of the dogs had ropes around their necks when they were found, and Ziggy had stickers all in her fur.

On top of that, her fur was terribly matted and you couldnโ€™t tell if it was a boy or girl. After giving Ziggy a nice trim they discovered that it was a girl dog.

The road to recovery

Krystal and her husband continue to care for Ziggy and to search for her new home. They have begun a long recovery process in order to get Ziggy to trust humans again.

Obviously, because of her struggles, it might be a long while before the animal understands the loving bond that can be built with a good owner.

One day, Ziggy will have her own family, and we canโ€™t wait for that, because this girl deserves all the joy and love in the world!
