What would you do if you encountered a dog in need on the street?
Proving to know just what needed to be done in the situation, a guard in New Orleans resorted to calling animal rescue after seeing a pit bull, clearly just having given birth and in pretty bad shape, looking distressed and wandering a neighborhood with no owner or puppies in sight.
This is the story behind an episode of Animal Planet’s Pit Bulls and Paroles where we get to see the sad but inspiring story of an abandoned pit bull and her puppies.
From the Streets
Tia Torres, host of the show, discussed the situation:
“I got a call from a local security guard about an emaciated dog that was roaming the parking lot. A dog loose on the streets of New Orleans can be a real issue and it’s clear she just had litter of puppies and was currently nursing.”
Torres is also the founder of the Villalobos Rescue Center, a New Orleans-based rehabilitation and rescue facility that specializes in abused and abandoned dogs, specifically pit bulls.
Clearly, the guard called the right place. The center immediately responded and sent a team to look into the matter.
Arriving at the scene, the rescuers spotted the pit bull, noticing the dog’s condition.
She was surprisingly friendly despite appearing to be in pain and came to the rescuers when they called her. After they put the pit bull on a leash, she led them to a house just twenty feet away.
A Sad Backstory
This is where they discover the dog’s heartbreaking story.
After questioning a man they found living in the house, they found out from him that the dog’s owner was currently in jail and the man in the house had supposedly been taking care of the dog as well as her newborn puppies.
The rescuers doubted at least a part of his story and they were concerned about the puppies.
They described the actual situation:
“The guy says he’s been taking care of her but it’s pretty clear that he hasn’t. You don’t have a dog at home that looks like this. This is something that you’d think running the streets for months.”
Seeing the condition the dog had been living in, the rescuers tried taking her away along with her puppies. However, the man refused to surrender the litter.
Rescue!
Not to be deterred, the rescuers contacted someone to help with the matter. In the end, they were able to get legal permission and retrieve all of the puppies from the house
A rescuer discussed the saving of the puppies:
“The first two they appeared to be okay. The second two puppies, though, they looked like they had some trouble. I don’t think these guys were taking care of the puppies whatsoever. But it is a relief that everybody’s accounted for.”
Because of the two puppies’ poor condition, they had to get them to their mother at the center to be nursed before it was too late.
Fortunately, they made it just in time. The puppies recovered, and the mama dog looked so entirely grateful to be reunited with her puppies at last.
It was the perfect end to what had begun as a sad story.
