Knitters from all around the world made there time in quarantine well worth it, by breaking the world record for the number of flags strung together. Also known as “bunting,” there’s a true art to the activity especially when it’s done to this magnitude.
This makes me want to knit something!
These craft enthusiasts’ strung together 79,001 triangle flags, setting a new Guinness World Record
Deborah Custance Baker, from Devon, England, came up with the brilliant idea. The record was brought by a group of employees from the Devon County agriculture show. Baker, who is the chief steward of the crafts and gardens for the Devon County Show explained:
“The crafts and garden marquee is one of the most popular sections at Devon County Show and all of our stewards and visitors are really hands-on. Every challenge we’ve set them so far they’ve not only succeeded in achieving, but have blown our expectations out of the water. The bunting is no exception.”
People from all around the world sent in the 79,001 flags, that Baker strung together herself
Many flags are decorated with flowers and designs, while other flags have notes to the United Kingdoms National Health Service and its frontline workers.
Drone footage captured the extraordinary display, that was laid out at the West Point area in Exxter, Devon, England.
The COVID-19 lockdowns played a part in making the project possible and ended up being theraputic for some
With the pandemic forcing everyone in to self isolation, knitting the flags gave them something to do in a time when they needed it most.
We do know that this is partly to do with lockdown. Many of our contributors have commented on how knitting has really helped them through this difficult period of self-isolation by giving them a sense of purpose.” Said Baker.
While their goal was to merely break the record, the knitters exceeded their goal and nearly doubled it
The old record was set by the Upton House at 31,119 flags at 4.6 miles. While the new record of 79,001 flags, was almost double stretching out 9 miles long.
“Several who had committed to making just a few suddenly found they had both the time and inclination to double, even triple their original pledges. We cannot believe people’s dedication and commitment to the task. We thought we might just beat the existing record but doubling it is a truly astonishing feat,” Baker explained.
Now the record must be submitted to the Guinness Book Of World Record to be verified before it becomes official
With the 9 mile bunting project done, the local community will be able to see it first hand on certain nights of the summer. The Devon County Show was cancled due to the Coronavirus, so this was a great way for them to keep the spirits up.
People will also be able to purchase sections of the flags, with all the money going to the Devon County Show charity of the year and other local causes. We don’t think anyone will be breaking this record anytime soon, but with the lockdowns who knows.
What an incredible project, the sheer volume of this could only be captured by drone and is mind blowing. To see the footage of the futue Guinnes Record, watch the video below!
