Man finds puppy tied up to railroad tracks all alone

February 22nd, 2021

Railroad tracks are dangerous places, and there’s a reason why strict trespassing rules are enforced. High-speed trains can generally reach 300–350 km/h, with passenger trains averaging around 200–250 km/h. A railroad track is not the place you want to be when a train is using it!

So when Jared Twedell spotted a movement on some railroad tracks up ahead, he thought that his eyes were deceiving him.

Jared was on his way to the local recycling center and had been driving along a road in Oregon when he noticed something strange outside his window.

There was an animal on the railroad tracks.

Oregon is a place full of all different kinds of wildlife, so when Jared first spotted the animal, he assumed that it was a deer. Even so, he worried that the deer wouldn’t be able to get off the tracks on time, so he decided to attempt to scare it away.

“There are railroad tracks near the gate, and out of the corner of my eye, I caught this flicker of movement,” Twedell told The Dodo. “I thought it was a deer lying on the tracks.”

In an attempt to startle it, Jared rolled down his window, and began to whistle and shout at the animal.

It was only once Jared had finished whistling that he realized that the deer was in fact a dog. Oddly, despite pricking his ears back at the sound, the dog refused to move from where he was sitting on the tracks.

But when he stood up, Jared’s heard dropped.

“I went into panic mode,” Twedell said. “He tried to walk toward the car and the rope pulled him back.”

The dog had attempted to come towards Jared, but was jerked back down by a rope that was tied around its neck. The sickening fact began to dawn on Jared: somebody had tied the dog to the tracks.

Jared knew that trains passed this area three times a day, and time was ticking before the next one came. Every second was vitally important.

Jared realized that he was the only one who would be able to help. If he left the area to try and recruit more people, he would lose valuable time.

He slowly began to approach the dog, making sure not to spook it. Luckily, the dog was friendly and relaxed around humans, and as its tail began to wag, Jared was able to move closer and check out the rope. He soon discovered that somebody had tied it into a sailor’s knot.

There was now no doubt in Jared’s mind that this had been a deliberate act.

Jared quickly untied the exhausted dog, and was able to get him off the tracks before a train came. He took the dog home with him and gave him the temporary nickname of “Train” before deciding on a more permanent “Samson” later on.

Jared wanted to guarantee that Samson would never be put through such horrific abuse again- and the best way to do this was to keep him for himself.

Jared’s family was full of rescue dogs as well as a rabbit, so Samson was going to fit right in.

Samson soon settled into his new life at home, and spent his days happily playing with his siblings.

Thank goodness Jared was able to save him from the tracks before it was too late.
