In A Midsummer Night’s Dream Shakespeare had Helena refer to her friend, Hermia, by saying, “And though she be but little, she is fierce.” The same can be said for Luna. Luna was an abandoned puppy but with a little TLC and a bond with a new best friend, her life completely turned around.
Luna was found in a box on the side of the road as a small puppy. Dina, a foster dog mom, took Luna in but she was not in good shape. Dina explained,
“I have never seen a more depressed dog. She couldn’t walk, she couldn’t even stand up. She would lick out of my hand or out of a spoon.”
While Luna had a very rough start to life, she was fierce.
Luna started to walk a week later, with a few stumbles of course. Yet, her will power was strong once she had the care and love she deserved. She was shaky on her feet but very curious. Luna started to get close to Dina’s other dogs and sniff them out. Her happiness was starting to show because she even started to wag her tail.
It did not talk long after learning to walk that Luna started to run.
Dina believes that once Luna started running, she became her true self and was truly happy. Luna went from not being able to walk, to shakily walking, to running and nothing was going to slow her down anymore. Luna came alive after learning to run.
Dina states, “There was a huge emotional and personal change with that. She was just like, ‘Oh my God, I like this. I’m gonna run around I’m gonna start eating some stuff.’”
Once Luna had her own feet on the ground running, it was time for her to start socializing. Dina knew that puppies should socialize with other puppies, but she had no other puppy herself to have Luna socialize with. Luckily, her friend had a puppy that could socialize with Luna.
There was only one catch, it was a giant Great Dane puppy named Zeus.
Zeus weighed in at 120 pounds already and towered over Luna. That did not matter though because the two became the best of friends. It did not matter about Zeus’ size because these two puppies clicked immediately. Dina says,
“It was love at first sight, I think … they just formed this really weird big creature, small creature relationship… Her whole body was the size of his nose.”
While Great Danes might be big in size, they are known as gentle giants.
Zeus was the perfect first companion for Luna. It might seem unusual from the outside looking in, since Zeus seems far from being a puppy, but it was magic. Zeus started to take care of and be protective of his little Luna, while Luna turned into a whole new puppy compared to before.
Luna was not a small and scared puppy anymore, she was a small and fearless puppy.
Zeus’ influence and friendship with Luna brought out a whole new side of her. She became brave with everyone around her now. She would paw at Dina to wake her up and show off her fun personality through her paws. She started to wave them around everywhere and at anyone, including Zeus.
Her “paw personality” became so much that Dina and others would joke that she is really a cat.
Luna went from being a tiny and scared puppy that slowly learned to walk, run and eat on her own. Yet, it was not until she met Zeus that she truly became herself. It just goes to show that even dogs need strong love and friendship to get through hard times.
