When you look into an animal’s eyes, you can see many emotions.
Intelligence, care, love: these are all easily recognizable if given a glimpse. The animals around us reflect a natural innocence, an element of pure humanity that has somehow been misattributed to humans— and it’s hard to imagine anyone who would purposely do them harm as anything but an evil monster.
Unfortunately, one of these monsters made his presence in Romania known, leaving 4 horrendously injured puppies in its heartless wake.
Earlier this week, headlines everywhere covered the story.
Someone had covered 4 puppies in tar and had left them in the sweltering sun to die a slow and painful death. Fortunately, they were rescued by the Sky Foundation for Animal Rights before it was too late.
The animals were found in critical condition but have since been treated by a vet in Isai, located in North East Romania. He describes the experiencing, noting:
“One of [the puppies] had a particularly tough time. He had his left eye, his nose, and his mouth all covered in tar. We could really use some kind of animal police institution right now.”
Unfortunately, with a large number of stray dogs in Romania, police are not taking the shocking incident very seriously.
One officer was allegedly heard saying that he had no intention of “wasting his time” by investigating the case.
Cătălin Pavaliu, the founder of the Sky Foundation for Animal Rights, has noted that many shocking instances of animal cruelty have been cropping up in the region.
“We’re starting to think there’s someone in the city who does these kinds of cruel acts on purpose.”
Last month, Daily Mail reported on a group of puppies who were rescued from “shelters” in Bacau and Bucharest in Romania. In actuality, these places are better described as ‘kill houses’, only holding puppies for 2 weeks before they are slaughtered.
Paws2Rescue, the charity responsible for rescuing the puppies last month, has seen some shocking animal cruelty cases in Romania, including one dog that had been beaten so badly its eyes had literally popped out.
Romania’s loose stance on animal rights is directly related to its large population of stray dogs, a phenomenon which has been attributed to industrialization. Despite having undertaken horrifying euthanasia practices for the past 20 years, Friends of Homeless Dogs say, “There are still as many stray dogs in Romania, if not more.”
These 4 puppies got lucky, however. After being held at the vet’s for a week to undergo observation, they will be adopted out to loving forever families.
Now if only more Romanian puppies were lucky enough to get the same opportunity…
