Everybody deserves somewhere safe where they can rest their head. Somewhere comfortable. Somewhere with a buffet at every meal?
That’s the life that one cat earned after giving birth to 4 kittens. But things weren’t always this way for the cat known as Mama.

Mama was a stray cat who came to visit the same house everyday in search of food. She came to the house because she knew that she would always get fed.
Vanessa is the owner of this special home. Based in New York, Vanessa feeds and takes care of the cats in the area.
Vanessa told Love Meow:
“I always joke that there’s a kitty billboard out there that brings these cats to me.”

Luckily for Mama and several other cats, Vanessa is there to provide when others aren’t.
One day, Vanessa noticed a Torbie cat outside of her house. The cat appeared to be looking for food but when Vanessa tried to approach her, she would back away.
Vanessa wasn’t sure if the cat was feral or not but knew for certain that the cat was in need.
She began to feed the cat regularly. Over time, the cat showed up for her daily meals. Just like clockwork.
It was during this feeding ritual that Vanessa noticed the cat was pregnant. She became concerned knowing that kittens born out into the world were at risk of many dangers.

Suddenly, Mama stopped showing up for her meals but when she finally reappeared, she was no longer pregnant. She had clearly given birth but nobody but Mama knew where she was keeping the kittens.
Vanessa also noticed her appetite had picked up.
“She was eating up a storm — she had a whole can of wet food at noon and then came yelling for more.”
Vanessa was desperate to locate Mama’s newborn kittens. She even tried watching her when she left. But Mama seemed aware of what Vanessa was trying to do. Instead of eating and leaving, she hung around after and made sure she wasn’t being followed when she left.
Vanessa referred to these moments as “standoffs.”
In an attempt to gain Mama’s trust, Vanessa began providing her meals three times a day. Slowly, it seemed to be working. After a week, Vanessa was able to pet the cat for the first time.
Mama began to trust Vanessa more and more.

Eventually, Mama let Vanessa follow her to where she hid her kittens. There were 4 in total and each one looked different than the others.
Vanessa wrote on her Instagram page:
“We have one ginger, one tux, one tortie and what looks like one gray tabby…”

But Mama kept moving the kittens around. Vanessa had to watch from her window to see where Mama was going. Eventually, Vanessa found their new hideout.
Vanessa was able to scoop the kittens up by distracting Mama with food, of course. Vanessa had a cage ready for them inside her step daughter’s room.

She wrote:
“No more worrying about her at night, or if she will bring me the babies. Now she has no choice!”

Mama seemed to be exhausted from spending so much time with her kittens. Vanessa gives her breaks from her litter and allows her space and time to roam.

Vanessa is doing such great work giving these cats a home. You can keep up with Mama and her other cats on her Instagram page. She writes updates in the form of daily journals called Meow My Diaries!
