It isn’t uncommon to see repeat contestants on competition shows.
Preacher Lawson appeared on season 12 of America’s Got Talent back in 2017. Unfortunately, he lost to 12-year-old ventriloquist, Darci Lynne.
But the audience and judges enjoyed his act so much, he was invited to return to perform a standup routine for this season.
Lawson hails from Memphis, Tennessee. He got his name because friends of his mother always believed that he was going to be a preacher.
Lawson pokes fun of his name stating:
“I don’t know if I was walking on my bathtub water. I don’t know but that’s where it came from.”
He has four other siblings.
Life wasn’t exactly easy for the family. During his initial audition, he revealed that there was a point when they all slept in a car.
But he says his mother always made things seem better than what they were. He joked:
“Ohh, we should have no money all the time.”
His humble beginnings might have instilled his drive.
Though Lawson has been doing comedy for 8 years, he’s had trouble finding stage time to perform his hilarious jokes. He’s done gigs at laundromats and coffee shops.
“Sometimes I do stand-up in a coffee shop and there’s like three people nodding. So yeah, I’d like to be doing comedy in Vegas in front of people.”
He admits that winning isn’t everything simply because money isn’t everything.
Kinda.
“Money doesn’t give you happiness but uh, yes it does.”
Lawson is able to poke fun of anything. He even finds humor in losing out to his 12-year-old competitor a couple of years prior.
During his recent performance on AGT, he pokes fun of the loss, seemingly holding no grudges.
When he asks who voted for him, the audience cheers. But then he states that they clearly didn’t vote enough because he was beaten by the ventriloquist.
“She didn’t open her mouth the whole time,” he jokes.
“You would never know what it feels like to lose a million dollars to somebody that still has chores.”
It’s a hard truth and hilarious nonetheless.
Lawson continues to keep the audience laughing with his comparisons between being an adult and being a kid.
“She’s already a kid. She won!” he exclaims.
It’s no wonder the comedian won the 2015 Funniest Comedian In Florida and the 2016 Seattle International Comedy Competition.
He’s just THAT funny.
When he first auditioned for AGT, his performance was quite short. So short in fact, the judges asked for more jokes. Thinking on his toes, he knocked the audition out of the park. The audience and the judges gave Lawson a standing ovation at the end.
Though Simon didn’t stand after the audition (he loved it though, referring to him as “unbelievably talented), he was the first on his feet after his second performance and several performances after.
Howie praises Lawson after his performances telling him that he is funny both physically and verbally.
“This kid is a star,” he said to Lawson’s mom after one performance.
Lawson touches on a wide array of topics in his performances. He jokes about his family, dating, technology, kids, and several other things that everybody can relate to one way or another.
In one segment, his mother reveals that for his first-ever stand-up comedy show, he was so scared he wouldn’t go on stage. She had to physically push him to go on.
He’s very grateful that she did.
“That’s when you’re happiest,” she shared.
Preacher Lawson sure does know how to put a smile on other people’s faces. It’s rewarding to know that the audience does the same for him.
