No matter what decade it is, every kid loves getting a brand new toy for Christmas. Some things never change. The types of toys that are sold, however, are constantly adapting to a more technology-savvy customer base. The toys of last century were simpler and allowed children to use their imaginations better. Here are some of the most popular toys from the 1950’s.
Lock & Key Skates
These were the predecessor to the modernly designed roller skates. Unlike modern skates, you could slide your whole shoe into the foot space. That meant you could wear normal-height socks! Melanie’s song “Brand New Key” featured a chorus that discussed the skates, and it even became known as “The Roller-skate Song.”
Original Yahtzee
This game was originally marketed as “the fun game that makes thinking…fun!” The game is still popular among families today, even if it has undergone a few changes.
Teenager Travel Purse
Children always want to feel like they are older, and this toy catered to that desire. The purse was the perfect grown-up looking travel bag for teens.
Marbles
This is one game that is still popular today, although the original marbles looked a lot cooler than they do now. Marbles are a source of pride for children of any generation.
Easy-Bake Oven
The activity that allowed children to play in the kitchen without getting in their parents’ way! Supposedly it is a smaller version of an oven, but the treats never come out the same if you use the real kitchen appliances.
Antique Riding Horse
Every little girl wants a pony, and this was the closest many of them could get. This adorable horse transformed any room into a rodeo arena.
Hula Hoops
Originally designed as a children’s toy, hula hoops have only gained in popularity. They are the life of the party among adults and festival goers. You can even use a weighted hula hoop in your exercise regime!
Pull-A-Tune
This magical little toy allowed children of any skill set to make beautiful music. Just tap the colors, and voila! You’re a musician already.
ViewMaster
The original way to experience cool photos. The ViewMaster allowed children to see places they have never been before and imagine that they are there.
Slinky Dog
What’s cooler than a slinky? A slinky in dog form, of course! This plastic pup doubled as a pal and a toy.
Candy Land
This game is absolutely hypnotizing! What kid doesn’t want to stare at colorful pieces of candy while they play?
Frisbee
This toy combined playtime and fitness. It’s like playing a game of catch, but with running involved.
Spinning Tops
This toy definitely taught children patience. It might be hard to balance a top when you first try, but once you see it spinning away it will be well worth the effort.
Toys were much simpler back then. Children were able to expand their minds by filling in the games with their imaginations. One can only imagine how toys will continue to change in the future.
