There are many mysteries of the world. While some can be explained through research such as science, others are a bit more mysterious.
One mystery that some are trying to solve comes from a small village in Poland.
Miejsce Odrzanskie has a tiny population of 272 residents. While this is pretty unique in and of itself, the mystery lies in the gender of those born here. Specifically, in the last decade.
This village has not produced a male resident in ten years!
However, 12 girls have been born in the village since 2009.
The village drew attention when they sent their volunteer firefighting team to a competition this past June. When they sent an all-girls team to the competition, heads turned. People wanted to know, where were the boys?
One of the firefighters made light of the situation saying:
“Definitely girls rule in our village.”
They sure do and not just because she said so but because since there haven’t been any boys born in the last decade, jobs traditionally performed by men are now done by women.
Jobs such as firefighters.
One woman whose husband and father were both firemen, now has a daughter who is one.
“Why not?” she asked.
Her daughter, Aldona Golasz, is the youngest firefighter on the team at just two-and-a-half-years-old.
The chief of the voluntary firefighter brigade, her father, Tomasz Golasz, stated that he takes pride in his team of firefighters, regardless of their gender.
“I am very proud of the women who are in the firefighting department. They are really determined people who put a lot of heart into what they do.”
Despite the low number of men in the community, young women still dream of settling down with one someday.
One firefighter said,
“One of my dreams is, of course, having a husband. But our main dream is to get a new fire engine.”
She continued to share that the one they have is 44 years old!
These women definitely have their priorities straight!
Still, there are some who are very concerned about the lack of males in the village, like the mayor, Rajmud Frischko, who has offered an undisclosed amount cash prize for the first couple to produce a son.
“I thought it would be a very nice surprise,” Frischko said.
Frischko told The New York Times that whoever the next boy is, would be welcomed into the community with open arms.
“He will definitely get a very nice gift. And we will plant an oak [tree] and name it after him,” he revealed.
Frischko is also not opposed to naming a street after the boy. Since there is only one main street in the village, that could be quite the honor.
Since news broke about the town, there have been many people offering up advice on how to produce a son. Some have insisted on the woman changing their diet and even advising that the couple sleep with an ax under their bed.
But of course, these are just speculations. In reality, it is simply genetics.
It will be interesting to see what the future holds for this town’s greatest mystery.
