Police therapy dog caught stealing donated toys

January 16th, 2020

The Franklin Police Department did not understand where the donated children’s toys were disappearing to last Christmas. Slowly, all the toys were vanishing, and they could not find the culprit. Their “investigation” into the toy thief took an unexpected and hilarious turn, when they realized who the culprit was. The culprit was Ben Franklin, no not that Ben Franklin, but, Ben, their police therapy dog!

The police officers that were working a night shift at the Franklin Police Department in Franklin, Massachusetts. They soon realized that the toy donations were starting to shrink with no explanation. The toys were going to be sent to the Santa Foundation soon and needed to be found. The Franklin Police Department had organized an entire classroom of toys for the foundation and toys had been everywhere in the room just a day before!

It was not soon after that the police officers found their culprit. Their therapy dog, Ben Franklin, that has entire reign of the police station! The had noticed that Ben had been walking like a dog on a mission between the classroom and his bed, tucked under the desk of an officer. Before collecting the toys back, the officers had to get their hilarious thief on camera for proof, so Officer Cusson started filming!

Sgt. Brian Johnson, the public information officer for the Franklin Police Department, laughingly stated, “I don’t know what goes through the mind of a dog that comes into a room and is overwhelmed with toys and everything else!” We are thinking he might have thought Christmas had come early since he has been such a good boy!

Ben Franklin had been taking the toys to his “lair” which included a stuffed llama, penguin, and the baby doll from the video. When Ben had realized he was being filmed and caught, he started to pick up his pace and get his baby doll toy to his bed. ““I’m not sure what his rhyme or reason was, maybe they were just easy and close to the door?” Johnson chuckled.

Johnson laughingly defended Ben Franklin, who he states is usually a good boy. Ben, a golden retriever, is a therapy dog and his main job on the police force is to diffuse tense situations and provide therapeutic comfort to those in need. His main job is to visit schools and be there for the children who need his services. Maybe he was collecting these toys for them.

The Franklin Police Department posted Ben’s thievery on their Facebook page and the hilarious post quickly went viral! Along with the video, the officers wrote about the lesson that Ben Franklin had taught them that night.

“We learned an extremely valuable lesson today. When you have a classroom full of toys ready to be shipped off to the Santa Foundation, you should…

1.Close the door to the classroom

Or

2. Keep the toys elevated

If not, a golden retriever will slowly hoard them throughout the day and bring them back to his lair. Thanks to Officer Cusson for capturing this larceny on camera.”
