They say there is no deeper love than that between a mother and her baby. This love isn’t just felt by us humans, either – mother dogs develop an affectionate bond with their babies the moment they give birth.
Most dogs are lucky enough to give birth in a relaxed, prepared indoors environment. A good dog owner will create a whelping box to provide a safe, comfortable and clean area for the dog to give birth. But some dogs, including those that have been abandoned or have found themselves out in the wild, don’t have access to such luxuries.
In a video shared to YouTube, an animal rescue group, Hope For Paws, were on a late-night mission. They’d learnt that a stray pit bull had just given birth in a bush, and they needed to rescue them and them in to safety.
The new mom was clearly very agitated when the team arrived. She was lurking around the area that her puppies lay hidden, but she ran from her rescuers every time they got close.
Eventually, with plenty of comforting words of reassurance, the team managed to corner mom and gently put a lead and collar around her neck. They stroked her softly to calm her down, and though mom still looked scared, she clearly knew that she was in safe hands.
The next job was to collect the puppies. Thew team found them just off to the side of a couple of dumpsters, lying helplessly in the mud.
Each tiny, wriggling body was carefully lifted up and placed into a basket lined with a soft blanket. There were four puppies in total, two all-black, and two white with black spots.
As soon as the babies were safely in their basket, the team took them over to mom. They needed to show her that she wouldn’t be abandoning her children as the team headed off to the rescue center.
Mom was given a chance to give her little ones a sniff and a kiss before she was lifted into the front passenger seat of their car.
A short while later and mom was inside the rescue center, lying on a blanket while her babies fed from her. One by one, the tiny puppies were washed, before being placed back by mom’s side, where they belonged.
While dogs historically all gave birth in the wild, having a human around to support the birth and provide aftercare to both mom and her pups can reduce the risk of anything going wrong.
A human can also provide reassurance to mom, during and following on from such an ordeal. Giving birth isn’t easy, as any mom will tell you.
In this story, the brave pit bull was fortunate to have her happy ending. Three weeks on from her rescue, her gorgeous pups had already started to walk. Mom, who had been named Lexus, looked much more relaxed as she lay on the couch in her rescuer’s back yard.
Even better still, the Hope for Paws team shared an update at the end of the video, which announced that mom and all of her babies had since found their forever homes. Her babies’ lives might have started out on a low point, but there’s no doubt that they will all now be surrounded by the love that they deserve.
