Dogs are getting left behind as their humans flee Hurricane Harvey.
It is no surprise that Hurricane Harvey is wreaking havoc. Unfortunately, in the quest to make it to safety, many families are leaving their pets behind. In many cases, shelters simply won’t accept pets, leaving the humans with no choice.
Here are some of the unfortunate animals that their humans left behind, some of which were rescued by others.
This pair of dogs was left on a family boat when their humans fled.
Luckily, those pooches were rescued by friends of the family and volunteers.
A Daily Mail reporter spotted this dog chained to a phone pole in Victoria, Texas.
He untied the dog and brought him to a safe area.
This sad, wet dog was chained to a tree, also in Victoria, Texas.
Once again, reports say the dog was untied.
This canine in Houston was found clinging to a road divider to stay afloat.
She was rescued and brought to safety.
Dogs aren’t the only ones in trouble. This horse was stuck in his paddock as the water rose.
A video of his rescue was posted on Facebook.
This dog wasn’t intentionally left behind; he got separated from his humans.
The dog, named Cash, jumped into the Jeep of a man driving by, who then used social media to reunite him with his owners. Based on his Twitter feed, the man who saved the dog, Aaron Jayjack, has continued rescuing animals.
This kitten also got left behind and was seen wandering among debris in Rockport.
A neighbor spotted the cat and took it in.
There is some hope, however. Animal rescue organizations are working in the area.
Roman Forest, Texas, Police Chief Stephen Carlisle released a statement on Facebook:
“I promise you, that I will hold anyone accountable that unlawfully restrains their dog in extreme weather conditions. Dogs are your family members too.”
Between rescue efforts and others following Chief Carlisle’s lead, hopefully more animals can be saved.
It seems that for every photo of a dog left behind in Hurricane Harvey’s wake, there are many of people carrying their canines – or those of their neighbors – to safety.
A rescue shelter tried to force Kenneth and Minnie Bice to leave their pets behind.
Instead, the pair decided to sleep outside the shelter so they could stay together. The M.O. Campbell Red Cross Shelter gave them food, beds, and blankets.
Belinda Penn made sure her dogs, Baxter and Winston, came with when rescuers got her out of her home in Spring.
Some shelters are also accepting all family members, including canines. Which is good news for Happy and Tammy Newman and their dog, who are all waiting patiently.
Andrew White helped a neighbor and her dog escape her home in the River Oaks neighborhood.
Rescue workers didn’t feel the need to leave behind animals, either. Officers and volunteers alike could be seen carrying animals or loading them into boats.
A vintage military truck hosted humans and dogs alike as it took them to safety.

While Hurricane Harvey has brought out the bad in some, the overwhelming reaction is compassion. Texans and those nearby are going out of their way to help those around them, whether they walk on two legs or four paws.
