Penelope had known a hard life likely from the time she was born.
Even school children were frightened of her appearance.
She was abandoned as a pup when she was six months old and developed an unfortunate case of the demodectic mange, which was said to be so severe at the time that when she sought solace at a nearby school, her appearance would terrify young school goers.
But soon, her life would change for the better when a kindhearted lady put her at the back of her car and took her to a nearby shelter known as the Heigl Foundation. At this very moment, Penelope’s condition had worsened to the point where she couldn’t even lift her head and one of the members of the foundation asked if she were even alive.
Her rescuers were not going to give up hope for her.
From what the physicians at the foundation could tell, Penelope has had this terrible infection pretty much since she was born – and the fact that she was feared and scoffed just for something she never intended made her story even sadder. It looked as if she was at the end of her rope, but the Heigl Foundation never gave up hope and provided the unfortunate pup with as much food, water, and shelter as they could.
Penelope’s illness was completely treated and she started showing signs of life. Not only was she adapting to her new found surroundings but she was also shown enjoying it as her coat started growing in. Even just getting a warm cage, blankets, and plenty of food was a new life for this sweet dog she had never known. For the first time in months, she was able to sleep peacefully without worrying about the dangers on the street she was so accustomed to.
A glimmer of hope.
It only took a few days for signs that her strength was returning. She was finally able to lift her head and started to show signs of her own sweet personality shining through.
What took a little longer was her coat to come in, but with her coat fully grown, Penelope was revealed to be a gorgeous German Shepherd. Everything from her muzzle to her ears, eyes, and paws were completely rejuvenated from the kind hands of the Heigl Foundation.
But one crucial thing was still missing.
All that Penelope was now missing was a family. Many sweet-hearted folks of the Californian community were already in on Penelope’s tragic back story by following her updates on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and other social media outlets, just waiting for the chance to adopt her. The team at the Heigl Foundation finally narrowed the list of applicants down to the perfect fit. It was probably the best way a miracle dog such as her kick-off her year with her forever family.
This sweet little bundle of joy couldn’t be any happier.
It just goes to show you that a little bit of kindness goes a long way.
