For one Montreal-based man, his world almost came crashing down when he accidentally let his beloved pet white-capped pionus parrot out of his cage.
โI was putting some sheets on the cord, and I forgot to close the door,โ Claude Cadieux later recalled to the Montreal Gazette. โSuddenly, I turned my head, and I saw the bird flying away.โ
He thought that might have been the end, but the parrot had other plans.
A day later, a woman named Tania McIntosh was with her extended family and her 8-month-old son when the parrot landed on her balcony. While sheโs currently on maternity leave, sheโs spent time working in veterinary offices in the past, and currently volunteers for the local SPCA. She immediately recognized that the parrot was a domesticated pet, and she decided to get a little closer.

โHe was very, very happy to be picked up by people,โ McIntosh told the Montreal Gazete. โHe actually ran toward us. I picked him up, brought him straight into the kitchen, shut all the doors so he wouldnโt fly away and gave him some dinner. He had some blueberries, some grapes, some cashews. He didnโt like mangoes though.โ
After feeding him, the parrot rested in a small nook above the refrigerator. She then decided to try to locate the owner and get the friendly bird back to his home. She asked close neighbors, but it seemed like no one knew who he belonged to.
Not knowing where to turn next, she decided to post about it on Facebook. Barring that, she decided she would consider bringing him back to her home in a different location, even going so far as listing herself as a potential foster and leaving Piou-Piou at SPCA while she got together the necessary supplies to take him back to her home.

Luckily it didnโt get to that, as her Facebook post quickly went viral in her local neighborhood and a mutual friend between the two of them saw the post and contacted Claude Cadieux about his missing parrot.
โIโm really happy to have him back,โ Cadieux finally noted to the news. โItโs like a miracle.โ
Weโre incredibly glad that the pet was able to come back safely! While Quebecโs warm summers are mild enough for the bird, itโs harsh winters can mean a death sentence for escaped birds. Piou-Piou is a truly resourceful bird that must really love his owner!
