Oprah’s Cecil B. DeMille Award acceptance speech was one of the most momentous events of the night, and it will not soon be forgotten. The star began by talking about Sidney Poitier’s extraordinary path to success. Oprah, the first black woman to win the very same award, then moved into a discussion about the current political landscape.

“We all know the press is under siege these days,” the celebrity explained in a thinly veiled reference to our president’s war on “fake” news. “We also know its the insatiable dedication to uncovering the absolute truth that keeps us from turning a blind eye to corruption and to injustice – to tyrants and victims, to secrets and lies.”

Oprah stirred up feelings of distrust and resentment with the allusion, but she used it as a transition to move into a place of hopefulness. “I want to say that I value the press more than ever before as we try to navigate these complicated times, which brings me to this: What I know for sure is that speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have.”

The speaker then began to reflect on the #MeToo movement, highlighting the significance of being able to share your own story. She acknowledged the bravery it took for the women who participated to share what had happened to them. She then emphasized the importance of being able to share these stories with each other. “Each of us in this room are celebrated because of the stories that we tell, and this year we became the story,” she said.

Oprah then shared the history of Recy Taylor, a black woman who was abducted and assaulted by six white men. Taylor had never been able to share her story because of the threats that were made against her, and she died only days ago with a secret that had been ignored for a lifetime.

“She lived as we all have lived,” Oprah exclaimed, “too many years in a culture broken by brutally powerful men. For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare speak the truth to the power of those men. But their time is up. Their time is up.”

The declaration came off as a call to action for the women sitting in the room. Oprah’s words echoed a truth that has been brewing for a while: women will no longer be ignored. The star was summoning a new era with her message, one in which equality would be the way of the world.

“I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon!” the celebrity boldly stated. “And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say ‘Me Too’ again.”

These powerful words had the audience in an uproar. If you missed out on watching the Golden Globes, catch this incredible speech in the video below.
