There’s nothing like laughing when you’re desperately trying not to. It’s the easiest way to ensure you keep cracking up no matter how hard you try to stop. For most of us, those moments don’t happen on live television. But for two hapless news reporters, a story about a bomb threat contained a joke that caught them off guard. As you can imagine, hilarity ensued.
The reporters were sharing a story of a bomb scare at a store in Wichita, Kansas.
The first minute of the story was pretty standard. But the twist at the end made everyone in the studio lose their cool.
“Some scary moments for customers at a Kansas Home Depot,” said the reporter. “Police responded to reports of a bomb threat at the store in Wichita. A customer alerted employees of a man inside the bathroom, said there was a bomb in the building.”
The story continued…the man was stunned to be held up by the police.
He told them he’d gone into the bathroom to — well, do what he had to do. It was his wording that caused panic.
“That man told police he warned other guests to leave the restroom because he was, quote, ‘Fixing to blow it up’ but had no intention of causing a panic,” said the reporter. The reporter tried to continue but suddenly seemed to grow aware of the snickers around the studio. And then the lightbulb went off.
“Others in the room laughed, understanding his joke, which I’m just now getting,” she said.
“But I can tell you right now — you asked the producer for me to read that, didn’t you?”
Meanwhile, the other news reporter was unable to contain his laughter. He looked as though he was almost crying from the effort of trying to suppress it. He even valiantly tried to continue. Unfortunately for him, the next story was a bit silly, too. Although his co-worker asked him if he needed them to cut to a commercial, he insisted he could continue.
He never did fully recover. Fortunately for people on the internet, they made a video clip that’ll never be forgotten. Everyone found it just as hysterical.
“I think it was the back to back stories about blowing up a bathroom and a stolen bonsai tree that broke him,” said one commenter.
Others chimed in, agreeing it was the combination of the first and second stories that made it funny. The second report involved a family sending a message to a stolen bonsai tree.
“The best laughter is during times when you have to be serious and keep a straight face,” said another commenter.
“Definitely had a good laugh at that first story,” said another commenter.
“But when I heard ‘3 and a half foot bonsai tree’ I kind of went silent with a slight jaw-dropping. Followed immediately by the thought that the tree had to be really fucking old. Then the graphic popped up stating 400 years old.
One thing’s sure — you’d better be careful with using terms like “blow it up” in a public bathroom.
