The essential joy of being with horses is that it brings us in contact with the rare elements of grace, beauty, spirit and freedom. – Sharon Ralls Lemon

One day, the staff of Lucky Orphans Horse Rescue of Dover, NY received an anonymous call about the condition of some horses across the river. Without hesitation, they took action and brought home 3 malnourished horses.

“Rosie was just depressed. Her spirit was very very low. The three of them were just so beat down but we brought all three horses home,” said Daenna, the founder of Lucky Orphans Horse Rescue

You can clearly see in their eyes how they have been in this situation for a very long time now. They were anxious, hungry, and in a very bad shape.

“They’ve been malnourished for a very long time,” said Dr. Clas, a vet who looked at the horses.

You can clearly see how Daenna’s fingers would even fit in between Rosie’s ribs. Her eyes, sunken and her knees weak. Rosie was with her daughter Britt and another horse named Midnight when they were brought in to the rescue home.

To aid with their recovery, Daenna asked Amanda to come and help with Rosie’s rehabilitation. Amanda is Rosie’s friend from where she was found. She was the one helping Rosie get some food by sneaking some for them even if that meant being yelled at by the previous owners.

“When I first met Rosie, she reached under the electric fence to get some grass. When I saw that, it broke my heart. I had to help her. She became very attached to me, so did I,” Amanda shared at The Dodo.

Being able to see a horse, risking being electrocuted just to get some grass because she was starving was just so heart wrenching.

The first time Rosie saw that she had her very own bucket of fresh water and to be able to eat some fresh hay was just uplifting. No more hungry days for her, she has a new life now, a new safe place to call home.

They gave her a soothing bath, trimmed her hooves, and just showered them with love and care.

“Personality, body, spirit, everything about them are just like brand new horses!”

shared Daenna who was so excited along with Amanda to be able to see this day of hard work in rehabilitation for these horses!

The day came where all three horses were ready to be given the freedom that they’ve always dreamed of .When they were finally released into the lush green fields of clover and grass, they seemed to be overwhelmed at first until they realized – this is it!

Look at them go! They were so happy to be able to be free, to be able to run and feel the fresh air and be able to feed themselves until they are full. A life they truly deserve.

Daenna and Amanda felt so happy, even beyond words to see that these three horses are now living the life they deserve.

“It’s refreshing to know that they’re safe now. They don’t ever have to worry about food or shelter again. They’re just home and they’re healthy and they can stay that way,” Daenna shared as they looked over the happy horses enjoying the field.
