Martina Desjarlais knows what it means to keep tradition alive despite obstacles. This Native Canadian mother lives in Camrose, Alberta, Canada. She is raising her two children to feel the same sense of pride that she feels in her culture, and she is wasting no time in teaching them her family’s sacred traditions.

Recently she taught her older son, Albert, how to dance. The little boy is energetic and adventurous, so it makes sense that when he was met with a new challenge he met it in full force. Martina began teaching Albert new dance moves, and he caught on quickly.

This adorable little boy is excited for life, and that trait shows in his twinkling eyes. His cuteness has certainly captured the attention of many, but it was his talent on the dance floor that took the internet by storm.

When Martina taught her son his first traditional dance, he wasted no time learning it. At first he began in a closed setting. Albert practiced in the privacy of his own home for a while, getting better with each new attempt. Soon it would be time to perform before an audience.

Martina dressed Albert in a traditional garb, and he looked totally adorable. He wore the colors and feathers of his ancestors, and he brought a noble tradition back to life.

Albert was always mesmerized by other performers; it isn’t hard to believe that his dancing talent comes naturally. When this little boy was still learning how to dance, his mom brought him to see a performance.

At first he was hypnotized by the way the entertainers moved about, but then something clicked. Albert jumped right in and started grooving like a pro. Dancing is in his blood.

Finally it was time for Albert’s first pow-wow. He stood in front of the crowd, dressed in the full traditional ensemble. If he was nervous in front of all of the spectators sitting on the grass, he certainly didn’t show it. This boy was ready for a performance.

He stomped his feet and shuffled about. Even at his young age Albert was already keeping up with the pros. He simply looked like he belonged on the dance floor.

As Albert enthusiastically raised and stomped his feet, his bright smile showed just how much he loved to dance. Between his rhythm and his confidence, this boy is sure to grow up to be a great dancer.

Dancing is one way to keep a culture alive. People around the world all have their own unique ways of grooving to the music, and their moves often reveal something about their lifestyles. By teaching her son the art of traditional dance, Martina has preserved a piece of her past.
