Amelia Milling was on vacation in Alaska when she got into a terrible accident. Just when she had given up hope, Nanook the husky came to rescue her.
It all began when Amelia Milling, a student at Rochester Institute of Technology, decided to go on vacation to Alaska.
She decided she would go on a three-day solo hike up a mountain.
But then disaster struck. Milling slipped and fell over 600 feet down the mountain.
The hiker was far off the trail. She could walk but not with ease. She had no idea how she could find safety. Her satellite messenger wasn’t working.
Milling began to despair. But then she noticed something approaching her.
It was a beautiful white husky dog. The animal looked far too healthy to be a stray. Then she noticed that the dog was wearing a collar.
Milling saw that the husky’s name was Nanook. Nanook began cuddling and licking Milling.
The dog could tell that the human was cold and tired. He was trying to warm her up.
Eventually, Milling had regained some strength, and she started walking again. The husky started guiding her back to the trail.
But then the Milling and Nanook had to cross a frozen lake.
The ice started to crack. Then Milling fell into the freezing water.
Nanook dived in right away. The dog dragged Milling out of the water, saving her yet again.
Milling then got into her sleeping bag to warm up. Nanook also went inside to warm up. Once more, he licked Milling, this time to try to make her dry.
The hiker then checked her satellite messenger again. She was able to get it to send an SOS message this time around. So she and Nanook waited desperately for rescue.
Hours passed. Milling was struggling to remain conscious when she finally felt a vibration in the ground.
Milling was deaf, but thanks to the vibrations, she knew that something was happening. She looked up and saw a helicopter slowly descending nearby. Rescue had arrived.
The state troopers helped Milling and Nanook onboard the helicopter. They then rushed to the hospital.
Milling told the state troopers how Nanook had appeared out of nowhere and how he had saved her from drowning. The state troopers couldn’t believe their ears.
“Nookie was nothing short of a modern-day lassie type hero.” – Lt. Eric Olsen.
At the hospital, the doctors treated Milling. Luckily, the young woman responded well and soon recovered.
When the doctors took Milling away from Nanook, the dog cried out a little. But then Nanook realized that the humans would do their best for the hiker.
The state troopers then contacted Nanook’s owner, Scott Swift, who came to the hospital to pick her up.
The state troopers told Swift of the amazing heroism that Nanook had performed. Amazingly, Swift seemed unsurprised. He revealed that this wasn’t Nanook’s first wilderness rescue.
In fact, Swift stated that Nanook had previously managed to save three other hikers who had got lost on the trail.
Initially, Swift had figured that the dog was doing this again. But he had started to worry when Nanook hadn’t returned to him.
Swift then began to wonder if Nanook had helped any other hikers on the trail. After all, Nanook would often wander off and return to him.
Who knew what she had been doing? So he started a Facebook page about the dog and asked if anyone else had been helped by Nanook. Soon dozens of people had messaged Swift, confirming that Nanook had aided them when they had got lost.
So Nanook did an incredible thing in saving Milling. But really, that’s all in a day’s work for this incredible dog.
