Everyone feels a little embarrassed by their parents from time to time. It could be that their folks are singing in public, acting unusual, or even just their choice of conversation topics.
However, for teenager Hayley Stephens, her embarrassing parent story involves her stepmom’s spontaneous dance moves.
A video of mother Amy Stephens’ crazy moves actually went viral recently, racking up millions of views in just a matter of days. Now how is that for awkward?
It all started when Amy discovered that the oven door in her home made a squeaking noise that sounded like the popular Usher song “Yeah”.
She made a video clip of her playing the intro notes to the track using her oven and then totally rocking out afterward.
The camera then pans to Hayley who is covering her face with her hands in total embarrassment.
The short clip ended up being uploaded to the iOS and Android application TikTok — “a social media video app for creating and sharing short lip-sync, comedy, and talent videos”.
Before Hayley and her mom could even realize what was going on, the video quickly picked up traction, and soon, it was being shared all around the world. They were shocked at the time, but it’s no surprise really.
Their goofy oven song and accompanying dance moves are simply hilarious.
While at first, Hayley was was a little mortified by the popularity of the video, eventually, she came around.
She now is proud of her mom and the joy they were able to bring to so many people.
“My favorite part is all of the positive responses like ‘this has made our day’, ‘we want moms as cool as you’,” said Hayley.
Hayley’s other sisters all agree. It is pretty awesome that their stepmom is now famous. They had been trying to make a popular video for a while, but ultimately, it was Amy whose ten-second clip put the family on the map.
It isn’t the first time the mom has shown off her dance moves on camera though.
Another short clip features her and the girls dancing the two-step in the hallway of their home to the song “The Git Up” by Blanco Brown. It’s just as funny.
“I don’t think you ever need a reason to dance. I dance on the treadmill, at the gym, I dance at Walmart, I dance at Publix. I dance around the house when I’m cleaning. I just dance all the time!” said Amy.
Her daughters largely don’t mind.
Although, it is kind of embarrassing for them when she starts dancing while they are shopping.
“She’ll start dancing at Walmart or Publix – I walk away from her and pretend she’s not my mom,” daughter Kasey joked. “I know my reaction looks like don’t love her and I’m not grateful for her but I really am and I really do love her.”
All in all, they are a pretty awesome family. It’s so great that the kids have been able to accept their mom’s dancing despite the slight awkwardness it sometimes causes for them. While none of them could have ever predicted that an Usher song played on an oven would end up being their breakaway moment, that’s exactly what happened.
