Imagine being a mother and going a whole year without seeing your young son? That must be torture. Well, a year before this event, Logan Podpora joined the Navy.
As any good parent would do, they sent him well wishes as often as they could. They missed him dearly.
Even the dogs missed young Logan, who surely ran and played with them, scratching their scruff like any good brother.
But as much as the family loves their Logan, his mother was very proud to see him graduate boot camp when he did. For the ten months following boot camp, Logan was stationed in Florida, well away from his family. He told his mother that he would not be able to make it home for Christmas. That he would visit sometime the following year.
Like any mother, she was devastated, but kept her chin up. He wouldn’t be there for her birthday party on the 20th of December either, when she would turn 50-years-old. However, as it turns out, Logan was granted a 15-day holiday for Christmas, and no one but his dad knew. The night before her birthday, his dad told his brothers, and they were ecstatic.
They kept their mouths shut as they blindfolded their mother so they could “assemble her present” so she wouldn’t know what was going on. “Take off the blindfold,” dad said. In front of her was a big box. This must be her present.
With hesitancy, she got up and went to the box. “John, I don’t want to be videotaped, I really don’t,” she complained.
But her complaints were ignored. Inside this box was a smaller box. Of course, her family was playing tricks on her. At this point, you can see her starting to get discouraged.
And inside that smaller box was a note. But what did the note say? “Mom, you have to look closely to find me.” Of course, she assumed that this meant to look inside the small box. After looking and looking, she couldn’t find her gift. “Is it a box of love?” she laughed. The truth was, her gift was sitting right around the corner, waiting to be found.
After minutes tick by, she gives up and sits on the couch, until her husband John tells her she needs to get up and start looking. He told her she was making assumptions about the gift being in the box.
The second she sees her gift, she freaks, screaming, “Oh, my god!” Her son was sitting at her kitchen table this entire time. The love of her life that she hadn’t seen in a year was sitting in the room next to her.
Without hesitation, she runs to him and wraps her arms around him. He was waiting for her with a bouquet of flowers and open arms. At this point, she is sobbing uncontrollably. “This feeling, I had this weird feeling today.”
“What are you doing? I’m not ready for you,” she says. “Your sheets are dirty.” Yes, it’s just like a mother to think things such as this.
“How did this happen?” mom asks. Another son chimes in, “he deserted,” bringing a round of laughter to the emotional room. “How long are you here for? A week?” she asks. Logan replies, “Nope, two weeks. That is until they catch me!”
Finally, mom could breathe and enjoy not only her birthday but the Christmas season. Not there’s only one thing left to do. Let the dogs say hi!
