The Mother-in-law is a heavy smoker. Both parents are worried about third-hand smoke and the effects on the baby. They wrote in to an advice column for advice.

The concern the parents have is the third-hand smoke
At the same time, they don’t want to offend the Mother-in-law, plus they are not sure what to do when they are visiting her.
Shower and Change


The parents want to stipulate that the Mother-in-law shower and change before she holds the baby.
Some are wondering if this is a bit extreme.
The Advice


The advice columnist basically agreed with the daughter-in-law.
She agrees that the Mother can set the rules when MIL is visiting their house.
When the baby is visiting grandma’s house this may not be as practical as the house may be smoke soaked. Suggests parents stay at a hotel instead of at MIL’s house.
Dealing With The Feelings


The advisor also acknowledges that the MIL may have hurt feelings but this is not the daughter_in_law’s problem. The MIL should be made to feel welcome but perhaps this approach will entice her to give up smoking.

Many are familiar with second-hand smoke, but what is third-hand smoke?

This is the smoke that lingers on surfaces such as walls, floors, and furniture. Also, yes on the clothing for the smoker or those who are near someone is smoking.
The Dangers
The experts are saying that thirdhand smoke can expose children to higher risks of asthma, ear infections, pneumonia, and may encourage frequent illnesses.
The Toxic Residue


Many grandparents are offended if they are asked in they smoke around their grandchildren. Most will say they go outside to smoke.
But, as soon as they come in and the grandchildren crawl up on their lap they can smell the smoke. The experts say that if they can smell it they are inhaling it.
The Cigarette Chemicals
There are 3,000 chemicals in cigarettes. Some of the residue from this can linger on surfaces. Then if these surfaces are touched it can be absorbed into the body.
Not Worth Taking The Chance


Experts are saying that a lot more study has to be done concerning the ill effects of cigarette smoke.
There is enough evidence that supports the dangers of second-hand smoke. It is better to err on the side of caution when it comes to third-hand smoke.
Was The Daughter In Law Right?


Obviously the new soon to be parents have done their research to even be aware of third-hand smoke as this is a fairly new topic. Most will agree that they are right about their concerns. It is up to the Mother-in-law to come to her own conclusions. She will have to decide how to react to the parent’s wishes. Whether to become offended or to take the precautionary steps they are asking her to.
