It’s fair to say that for most of us, our teenage years mark the vainest period of our lives.
Not only do teenagers have to adjust to their rapidly changing bodies, throw hormones into the mix and they’re self-conscious to say the least. Teens are desperate for acceptance from their peers, and they think that looking good is the only way to gain this.
Which probably goes to explain why so many teenagers are a fan of the selfie.
Selfies have become so popular nowadays that they no longer need an explanation. We’ve even seen the rapid production of selfie aids, like the world-renowned selfie stick, to help the avid selfie-taker get more into the shot.
Though many of us see selfies as the new norm, there’s a time and a place for snapping a pic.
On vacation? Of course. In your bedroom? It’s acceptable. But a retail store probably isn’t the place to whip out your phone.
One woman, Christian author Susannah B. Lewis, took to Facebook to have a rant after witnessing “a gaggle” of teenage girls taking pictures in T.J. Maxx.

On a video shared with her friends and followers, Susannah set the story by explaining that she’d nipped to the shops to buy a polo shirt for her son when she came across the girls.
She then used a chewing gum box – a pretend phone – to demonstrate exactly what they were doing in hilarious detail.
According to Susannah’s acting, the girls were posing, pouting, sticking their hands on their hips and making the peace sign with their fingers, all while making some very interesting noises.
They’re so characteristic of lots of teenage girls, but seeing a grown woman mimic the actions makes them look comically ridiculous.
Susannah added:
“Y’all, if I was 16, if I was standing ’round in the clothing store going, ‘ah, ooh, uh, uh’, and my mamma saw me, she would call the doctor and say, ‘This child is having fits. I think she’s posessed.'”
Susannah continued to explain that she’d approached the girls in an attempt to stop the selfie-taking.
She said:
“I thought let me just go over there an end this really quickly, I said ‘Hey girls do you want me to take a picture of the three of ya’ll together?’ Like they’re standing in front fo the Eiffel Tower or some landmark. They’re in T.J. Maxx.”
But according to Susannah, one of the girls replied, “No, ma’am, that’s okay.” While Susannah appreciated the manners of using “ma’am”, but she said she still felt a little “anxious”.
When Susannah left the girls, she said that they were still taking selfies.
Her biggest source of confusion was that the girls were taking photos above their heads to “make everything nice and tall”. But, with them being 15, Susannah pointed out that everything was already nice and tall.
“I guess the point is I just don’t really understand the youth today,” she finished. “Maybe I really am an old ma’am cuz I don’t understand standing around in a discount clothing store taking photos looking like a possessed Tasmanian Devil.”
There’s no denying that Susannah’s rant is hilarious and well worth a watch. But is she caring too deeply about something innocent? Perhaps.
At least the teens were taking selfies, rather than shoplifting or doing something else to get in trouble with the law.
