Many women know that “looking beautiful” can come with a lot of work.
We dye our hair, use products to style it differently, buy lots of makeup, and go to the gym to try and get in shape.
But beautiful is, however, you define it! For one mom, feeling beautiful came from her intense regimen.
Every night for two decades, Jan DeVito went to bed with a full face of makeup and her hair styled up in a bun!
Jan refused to let anyone see her without her makeup on, not even her husband. Part of her beauty routine was touching up her makeup several times a day. She showered herself with hairspray to keep her hair perfectly styled in her bun.
Jan would even sneak in a few sprays for herself whenever she was working on her clients at the salon!
Ever since she was 16 years old, Jan had the same beauty regimen. She will flip her hair over her head, rat it, and then style it up into a bun. She’d been wearing the same kind of makeup since she was about 15, only adding slight variations over the years.
Jan’s daughter, Gina, wrote in to The Oprah Winfrey Show to get her mom some help with her beauty routine:
“I enjoy my mother’s company. At times we have lots of fun, but I often nag her, Rapunzel let down that bun.”
On a typical day for Jan, by lunchtime, she would have reapplied her makeup at least twice. Then she would always reapply before getting into bed for the night.
Not only was her beauty routine the same for two decades, Jan was also wearing the same clothes for the last 25 years.
She claimed her feet got claustrophobic, so she was always in open-toed shoes, that have a 2-inch platform or higher.
Gina wanted her mom to get a makeover, so she could have more confidence in herself and look younger since her mom was known as the woman with “the silver bun.”
As you can see in the video below, Jan got her makeover, but it was actually a makeunder! Or, as Oprah called it, a “make down.”
Oprah and Tyra Banks helped Jan get in touch with a softer side of her beauty and she looked fabulous. Her daughter leaped out of her seat and rushed onto the stage to hug her mom after the makeunder.
