Friends Keep In Touch With A Long Distance Friendship Lamp
These are unlike anything we've ever seen before... fun, but are they worth the price?

Anyone who has ever had to move away from a friend for any reason knows how tough it can be.

You’ve been hanging out with them for so long and they’ve become an integral part of your life, then suddenly they are gone. All you want to do is see your friend in person and give them a big hug, watch some movies, go out for brunch, or whatever really. Just normal friend things. Then you realize they are all the way across the country. It’s a total buzzkill.

Luckily though, there is a new product on the market released by UncommonGoods that is helping friends to keep in touch with each other, even when thousands of miles apart. It’s called the Long Distance Friendship Lamp.

The idea is that each friend keeps a friendship lamp in their home. Then when you touch your own lamp, you can make their lamp light up all kinds of different colors.

It’s a fun new way to let your distant friend know that you are thinking of them and that they haven’t been forgotten.

“Light up loved ones’ lives—across town or across the world—with these in-sync lamps,” the product description reads.

There is also a pretty adorable love story behind the lamp and why it was invented.

Creator John Harrison was working as a violin professor at Wichita State University when he first met a woman named Vanessa Whalen. She was a pianist at the university. Over the course of a few years, the two fell in love and started dating, and eventually, on Christmas morning 2014, John proposed to her. Of course, Vanessa said yes.

However, that morning he also proposed another idea — that they build the lamps to connect themselves to their family members that were spread across the country. A little crazy, maybe… but ultimately, a great idea they thought. Thus, the friendship lamp was born. They gifted their first lamps later that year.

Anyway, the lamps definitely sound pretty cool in theory, but how do they work?

It turns out, all you really need in your house is an Internet connection and electricity. Once your lamp is plugged into the wall, you can either connect the lamp to the Internet through WiFi or do a direct connection with an Ethernet cable.

They also come in multiple different styles.

You can choose either the original model as seen in the photo above or opt for a neat mid-century themed lamp.

One interesting feature as well is the ability to modify the colors.

Assign your friend whatever color you would like, and then whenever you touch your lamp, theirs will start emitting a glow in whatever hue you selected. They work with multiple people too. If you have a large friendship group you can customize it so each friend gets their own color.

The real question though is what is the price?

According to the website, The Long Distance Friendship Lamp – Mid-Century version currently costs $95. That means a total of $190 combined between you and your friend. While that’s no small chunk of change, can you really put a price on maintaining a friendship? We suppose that’s up to you.

At the very least, the friendship lamp is certainly a very unique product, unlike anything we have ever seen before.

If you are missing your long distance friend, maybe you too can gift them one next Christmas, just like creators John and Vanessa did. It’s always a good idea to let your friend know you are thinking of them.
