Doing the right thing is usually the best route, but sometimes people take your kindness for weakness and take advantage of the good deeds you do. That’s what happened to one kind-hearted woman, who decided to let someone in need stay in her garage temporarily. Now, the man is refusing to leave and because of the ban on evictions due to COVID-19, there’s nothing she can do about it.
This is so unfair, this guy is a total jerk!
Sylvia Arocha is a 67-year-old woman from San Antonio, Texas, who is terrified of the man who’s squatting in her garage apartment
It all started when the kind woman met a man that was down on his luck, she offered to let him stay in her garage apartment for a couple of days while he got back on his feet.
Days quickly turned into weeks and weeks into months, now the man is refusing to leave and has moved in his girlfriend and kids.
Sylvia is even paying up to $300 per month for the man’s electricity bill
Since he was only supposed to stay for a few days, there was no discussion about him paying rent, and Sylvia is left footing the bill. She’s asked him repeatedly to move out, but he refuses to leave.
In Texas, a landlord must legally terminate the tenancy in order to evict someone. First, a written notice is required. If the tenant doesn’t move out after receiving the notice, the landlord can file an eviction lawsuit.
“He said he’s not going to move, he has rights.” Sylvia told San Antonia News 4, she went on to say: “My electricity went from eighty dollars to 300 dollars.”
The 67-year-old woman is now staying with family members because she’s scared of what the mean man might do
San Antonia police have been called out to the garage apartment 20 times, for a burglary in progress and multiple other disturbances including a drive-by shooting. Neighbors say they often hear screaming and domestic violence taking place, but the cops aren’t doing anything.
“I’m afraid of him, I really am afraid of him, I don’t know what else to do. I just want him to move, I want him away, all my neighbors want him away, I don’t want him here,” says Sylvia.
Evictions are already difficult and time-consuming, so with the COVID-19 restrictions they are even harder to execute
Even though the ban on evictions makes it difficult, Sylvia now knows her situation falls under an exception in the law and plans on filing to have the man removed from her property. Still, who knows how long that will take.
“She, good-hearted as she is, made a bad choice.” Said Chief Deputy Constable, Russell Brandau, he went on to explain the exceptions to the eviction law: “That involves violence, that involves drugs, that involve injury or bodily harm.”
Now, it’s just a waiting game for Sylvia, but we hope she can get him out soon
This is heartbreaking, for someone to take advantage of an older woman like this is just wrong. Hopefully, Sylvia will have him gone soon so she can be comfortable in her own home again. To see this story for yourself and see Sylvias interview with News 4, click this link!
