Public transportation is overwhelming for even the most abled people walking the streets. When you introduce variables like accessibility and comfort, things can get even more stressful. For one man in a wheelchair, his regular work commute was nearly deadly.

In places like NYC, accessibility for the subway is a work in progress.

The network of underground trains has slowly been updating its system to better accommodate people with accessibility needs, but it isn’t totally finished yet. Getting down to the train usually involves finding an elevator which are pretty few and far between.

Once you finally get below ground level, the challenge of getting ON the train begins.

The tracks are deep in the ground and the lifted floor that people wait on doesn’t have any guardrails or protection to keep people away from the dangerous tunnel. The yellow lines are designed to give people an idea, but it’s not always easy for someone who has only seconds to get on the train when they are in a wheelchair.

A man waiting at the Union Square station had the scare of his life when the 6 train came through at 1:15.

People standing by heard a strange noise and they soon realized what it was – a man had rolled off the edge and fallen onto the tracks as a train was on its way down. The people heard him whimpering for help and lept to action before it was too late.

“There is a downtown local 6 train to Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall approaching the station,” the announcement said. “Please stand away from the platform edge.”

As people ran to help, they jumped onto the tracks to pull the man up.

Most people stayed on the edge and pulled the man as he reached out his hands, desperately looking for help. One individual, an incredibly brave one at that, jumped into the danger zone and started pushing him up from the bottom.

It was all caught on video and you can tell just how close it was.

“One man jumped right into action,” she said. “He didn’t think twice whether he was going to go on those tracks.

The noises of other trains moving around show just how close a call this moment really was for the man who fell and the people who risked themselves to help. The woman who filmed said this:

“I was like, people need this. There’s heroes in action and I was like I’m going to wave my hand at the train and it will all be good. I hope people just take positivity away from all this.”

The incredible video of the “Subway Saviors” shows just how easily an accident can happen.

If those people wouldn’t have been there to help, things would have been WAY worse. Thankfully, they didn’t mind hopping down into the dirty mess to help someone out. Seems like a good reminder for all of us, doesn’t it?
