Seven years ago last week, a California man spent hours in the scorching heat, rescuing three puppies. It all started when Eldad Hagar was contacted by The Bill Foundation about a dog called Gaia who was abandoned.

The dog had given birth to three puppies and had been hit by a car, leaving her with injuries. The pups were hunkered down in a well where no one could reach them. Eldad Hagar was left to deal with this tragic situation, leaving his home at 3 AM to drive across the state of California. Sadly, by then, Gaia had passed, leaving her puppies as orphans.

The first pup, Sydney, wasnโt too difficult to coerce. He laid out some cheeseburger for her and she was out in no time. The others were not as lucky.

After hours of trying to get these small pups to come to him, Eldad was at a loss. It was then that he remembered Gaiaโs body. The moment Matilda sees their motherโs body, she runs to greet her. โEven in death,โ said Hagar, โGaia helped me save her baby.โ

Now two pups were saved, but one was still too shy to come forth. โI tied ropes to the momโs limbs just to make her move and make the puppy believe she was alive, but that didnโt work. I placed the mom in different positions, and that didnโt work either.โ

It took hours upon hours to get the smartest pup of all, Gabriella, out of her hole. Hagar eventually scared her out with the help of a friend.

โI walked to my car to see if there is anything there I could use, and then a brilliant idea came to me. Last year I bought a net gun (that turned out to be a useless piece of equipment as far as net shooting/dog capturing). However, I knew the one thing this device can do is to produce a really loud sound of explosion (produced by pressurized air).โ

After working all day to ensure these pupsโ safety, Hagar did what he came to do. Sure, there was some adjusting, but seven years later, all pups are grown, happy, and living in new homes.

Although most of us see Hagar as a hero, he doesnโt see it that way. โI looked over at the mom and decided to leave her where she had given birth to these beautiful babies three months ago. She was an amazing mother, she loved her babies, and it just broke my heart to know that this email was sent to me 24 hours too late. I believe Gaia was with me until all her children were safe,โ Hagar said, โand only then she crossed the rainbow bridge.โ
