If you saw puppies all on their own with no mom in sight, you’d do everything you could to make sure they were safe.
Obviously, there would be some confusion on how a litter of puppies even got into the yard in the first place, but rescuing them is the apparent first step for most of us. They need shelter, warmth, and some food and water!
When one man found himself in that exact situation, he knew he was going to help. Bringing them into his home, he posted a picture of the little pups on his Facebook to let his friend know the craziness of what just happened!
However, people began to point out what the man had actually brought into his house, and the post quickly went viral.
Craig Mcgetterick, the man who gound the puppies, lived in New Brighton, UK, and was cleaning up his garden when he saw the pups. After his post and a quick trip to the local rescue center, however, he learned he made a BIG mistake. These puppies weren’t dogs… they were foxes!!!
He also shared a Facebook post as he and his friend Beccie headed to the shelter:
‘After a rubbish removal job we unearthed a pile of rubbish and these little pups appeared in the rubbish we have taken them to an animal sanctuary so they have a chance to survive.’
The post was soon filled with hundreds of comments as people tried to inform Craig about the mix-up.
As the comments began to increase on Facebook, Craig’s friend Beccie decided to get in touch with Martin Hemmington, founder of the National Fox Welfare Society, to find out why the cubs had been left by themselves. Apparently, as the cubs grow, they become more independent and are left for longer periods of time. Martin said:
“Vixens leave their cubs all the time whilst they are in the den, and as they get older they’ll begin to explore their surroundings more and more, and become less dependent on mum as they get older.”
That night, the fox mom returned for her pups.
Even though the trash pile had been removed, the National Fox Welfare Society did their best to help Craig and his “puppies” out. They placed them back where they were found and made sure not to feed them.
“I didn’t give the cubs any milk in order for them to be hungry so they’d cry out and call for their mum, which they did,” Martin said. “I put them around the same place they were found, as I knew the mum would be looking for them, and she’d be checking the place she last had them.”
The incredible story was circulated all around the world as people fell in love with the “pups”. An honest mistake and a genuine rescue attempt turned into a cute moment of nature and its inherent cuteness!
Looking at the photos, it’s really hard to tell that these are fox cubs, and we believe that anyone could have made the same mistake as Craig. He might think twice about sharing any future rescues on Facebook, though! We probably would have thought they were puppies, too!
