A Canadian man is being hailed a hero for saving three kittens who were frozen to the ground.

Alberta, Canada is situated North of the already-cold state of Montana. Alberts spans across prairies, mountains and oil sands, and experiences some of the harshest winters in the country.

Extreme temperatures sometimes reach as low as -58°F (-50°C)! And -40°F is not unusual.

When the weather is this extreme it’s usually caused by something called the “polar vortex”… which yes, is as intense as it sounds.

For most of the year the polar vortex stays within the arctic circle, but in the winter it expands, reaching down to a handful of the Canadian provinces and sending them into a deep freeze.

So on a particularly cold winter day in Alberta, this oil worker was on his way to inspect some oil wells.

Kendall Diwisch came across three kittens huddled together in the snow, and immediately knew something was wrong.

He went over to find them shaking cold, with their tails frozen to the ground. He then started filming the whole interaction.

“Hold on, hold on, hold on” he told the kittens.

With some quick thinking he jumped into action and ran back to his truck to get his travel coffee mug.

A Tim Horton’s coffee no doubt – Canada’s most iconic coffee & doughnuts chain.

He used the warm coffee to melt some of the ice that was holding the cats and their tails to the frigid ground.

And the coffee helped him pry the kittens free.

They were so cold and hungry they even lapped up some of the milky coffee!

He then immediately took them to safety where they had some much needed food, water, and warmth.

It’s unclear as to how and why their little tails became frozen to the ground – but the warm coffee helped set them free.

He believes someone left the kittens out in the snow for some reason – but whoever left them has not been found and there is no explanation as to why.

It’s a miracle that he happened to be passing by this rural road in time to rescue them!

After sharing his story on Facebook, the post quickly went viral with more than 4,000 likes, 3,000 comments, and 6,000 shares.

*UPDATE*
All three little rascals went to their new home today where they get to be together instead of separating them. All three are eating and drinking and very energetic. Thanks for everyone’s consideration and offering to take them very appreciated. – Kendall Diwisch wrote on Facebook
