A wedding proposal is always fun to watch, but when the wedding proposal is specifically unique to the couple, you know that it is when it is true love. That is the case for Lee Loechler and Sthuthi David. Lee Leochler wanted to create the perfect fairytale proposal for his girlfriend, at the time but now fiancé, and the proposal went perfectly!
Sthuthi and Lee have been dating since high school and he knew that he was ready to take that next step. Sthuthi’s favorite Disney movie has always been Sleeping Beauty and he had the idea to recreate the famous kissing scene by adding themselves into the film. While the idea was fabulous, his vision would take six months and a massive amount of planning to work!
“A lot of illustrators said no, that it was too big, or they had too long of a wait list, or that they had too much going on already,” Loechler said.
That is when Loechler found Kayla Coombs on Instagram. Kayla creates portriats for couples in a Disney style and she was on board for such a big project! The next step was how to get Sthuthi to watch the film without making her suspicious. Loechler got Sthuthi’s family involved for this process. He knew he would propose when they both went back home for the holidays, so her family was the perfect cover.
Loechler partnered with a local theater from their hometown, Coolidge Corner Theatre, and rented out a room. After that, her parents took over. Her mother pretended to be invited to an advance screening of a film, by a fake e-mail Loechler created, and told her daughter she had bought tickets for the whole family. She invited Sthuthi and her boyfriend to attend with them, which she accepted. Sthuthi then called her boyfriend to let her know about their plans, not knowing she was inviting him to the proposal of his making.
Loechler wanted more of Sthuthi’s family and friends to attend but knew she would catch on if they were the only audience members in attendance. So, through Reddit, he invited strangers to the proposal with the offering of “food and drinks afterward to celebrate” and the ability to witness an awesome proposal.
“We put her friends and family in the way back and filled the space with people she wouldn’t recognize,” Loechler said.
Loechler felt that he had all the bases covered by the night of the movie proposal. Sthuthi and Lee, with her immediate family, went into the rented movie screening and sat down. She had not noticed her other family and friends, so they were safe there. Then the pivotal scene in Sleeping Beauty starts to play, when Prince Philip goes to kiss Sleeping beauty awake, but Kayla Coombs version plays instead.
The skin color of Prince Philip and Sleeping Beauty start to darken, and their features begin to change to the confusion of Sthuthi David. The couple onscreen has turned into the couple in the audience! Sthuthi continues to watch but becomes more confused by the second, but Lee just laughs it off until his version of Prince Phillip pretends to toss a ring box to actual Lee, who has a person throw a ring box to him at that exact moment.
That is when the real-life proposal to Sthuthi starts.
“It’s not every day you get to propose to your high school sweetheart. So, I just wanna take my time, savor this moment. [Speaking to the movie screen] Do you mind, this is kind of a big moment. … [Back to Sthuthi] I love you with my whole heart, including all of its ventricles, atriums, valves. She’s a cardiologist. Sthuthi David, M.D., will you live happily ever after with me?”
Sthuthi said yes! What an epic proposal by a future husband that knows exactly what his future wife loves. After she said yes, the film turned back on to end the night with fireworks. Here is to Sthuthi and Lee living happily ever after!
In no time the proposal went viral and men everywhere are chiming in about how there’s no way they’ll be able to top such a brilliant proposal. Deep down they envy him for it but people from all over have congratulated him for such a unique proposal idea they’d never seen before.
