When Chuck Hawley was driving to work last year, he discovered something that would make any compassionate personโs jaw drop โ a kitten literally stuck in in the middle of the road.
Since it was still a little dark out at the time, his first thought was that it was a cardboard box, but after taking a closer look, he realized it was actually a small cat.
It wasnโt moving either, so of course, Hawley pulled his vehicle over and went to investigate. When he went to pick the cat up though, he got a startling surprise.
Someone had actually glued the kittenโs paws to the pavement!
โWhen I went to pick her up, her feet were stuck to the road, and Iโm like uh oh. So I start to pull her feet up โ and it was like a rubber cement, so she was glued to the road.โ Hawley told KPTV.
Hawley couldnโt believe it.
The kitten was frightened, cold, and super stuck.
After inspecting closer, he was pretty easily able to rule out the possibility that the cat had accidentally walked through glue herself too. Someone had definitely coated the cat with the sticky substance on purpose.
โIt was pretty apparent that someone had soaked her feet in glue and sort of rubbed it into the pads of her feet,โ said Hawley.
In addition to her paws being covered, the five-week-old kitten also had glue stuck around her neck, down her side, and all over her tail.
The Oregon man knew he had to do something to help and immediately took the kitten to the Silver Creek Animal Clinic.
The veterinarian, Jenny Bate, was shocked and commented that she had never seen anything like this before.
โI mean, what can you think when something like that happens? Your first reaction is disgust, and then what could cause a person to do something like that?โ Bate said.
โSomebody put that glue there, I donโt know how or why, but yeah, I mean, somebody did that.โ
Luckily, Hawley had spotted the kitten and pulled over to save the day. She was very fortunate that no one had hit her with their vehicle by accident in the meantime.
Hawleyโs act-of-kindness didnโt stop there either.
The cat had obviously been abandoned and left for dead. She had no one to take care of her, so Hawley stepped up and did a beautiful thing โ he decided to adopt her.
Hawley named the cat Sticky and took her home the very next day.
He also added that his chance encounter with Sticky the cat came at the perfect time.
โThe funny thing is we were just talking about getting a cat a couple of night ago,โ he said. โSeems like thereโs easier ways for the cat to find us, but if thatโs how weโre doing it, okay, I guess thatโs how weโll do it!โ
While we still canโt believe anyone could ever do something so awful to a cat, thankfully there are kind people like Hawley looking out for our feline friends. Sticky will always be so grateful for the roadside rescue that ultimately saved her life, and now, she never has to worry about being glued to the road ever again.
