It doesn’t matter what species you are, every animal is capable of feeling compassion. And seeing the compassionate display below surely warms the heart.
On July 25, 2017, a man in Lamia, Greece came upon a disheartening sight.
He discovered an abandoned newborn kitten inside a trash can, left to die.
“This morning I went downstairs to take the trash out as I do everyday,” he said. “When I opened the trash can, I saw a newborn kitten tied inside a bag, hopelessly ‘mewing’ for help due to some irresponsible being, who had abandoned it there for a tragic death.”
Demonstrating the kindness of humanity, the man rescued the baby kitten from its tragic fate.
Thankfully for the kitten, the man knew of a neighborhood dog that had recently given birth that could nurse the kitten.
“Nature fortunately made it so that animals are kinder compared to man,” the man said about the experience.
It truly is fortunate that the dog had recently given birth. Within the first 24 hours of a kitten’s life, it is best that the kitten feeds from their natural birth mother.
The reason for this is because a mother cat produces a substance called colostrum that provides antibodies to help the kittens fight off any infections.
However, the vitamins and minerals that a kitten needs doesn’t differ much from what a puppy requires, though kittens need more crude protein and less crude fat than puppies who need the opposite.
Nevertheless, if the cat is abandoned or orphaned, a lactating dog can provide milk with similar nutritional value to milk that kittens could receive from their mother, as was the case in this video.
However, there is no guarantee that the mama dog would accept babies that aren’t her own, even if they are of the same species. But dogs are instinctually nurturing and loving, thus it is not unusual for a dog to accept small kittens as part of her litter.
This doesn’t just mean feeding them, but also cleaning them and protecting them as well.
Even a non-lactating dog can begin producing milk for an orphaned nursing animal if they encounter such a situation.
Altogether, the video below is a touching display of kindness between cats and dogs.
