Five years ago, a sweet little ginger kitten was rescued and brought home to a family with quite a large fur baby: a Golden Retriever named Keelo. With all the comical jokes, metaphors, and memes on how cats and dogs get along, it’s always heartwarming to witness large, gentle dogs extending nothing but love and gentleness to tiny, helpless kittens.
The kitten, which the family ended up naming Koda, was fortunate enough to have a first friend as sweet as Keelo. Golden Retrievers are generally cheerful, trustworthy dogs. Known to get along well with children and other animals, they’re always a delight to be around.
Keelo and Koda’s friendship proves just how wonderfully cats and dogs can get along.
In the description of the video, the furry pair’s parents wrote:
“They were instant friends when we first brought Koda home (who was only about a month old at the time, and could fit perfectly in my hand!). 8 months have passed since then and they still continue to be as close as ever. Their bond is incredible and something I’ve never seen between a large dog and a tiny cat before!”
It’s not just a mere case of cat and dog being civil towards each other in a shared space, either. It’s a sweet bond that may even inspire you to someday adopt two of your own!
Keelo takes good care of Koda. No matter how playful Koda gets or how many times she pounces on him, Keelo just sort of lets her.
In fact, he even lets the kitten boop him!
The gentle nature of the Golden Retriever helped form a clear understanding of just how the kitten was from the start. Keelo was always so careful around Koda, making sure to exercise caution with each movement. After all, Koda was much smaller and fragile. Koda, in turn, immediately felt comfortable around her new friend. She would crawl all over Keelo, snuggle close, basically do as she pleased, and Keelo wouldn’t even budge.
The curious kitten and the sweet, loving dog make a perfect pair.
Nap time is always a sight to behold, too. Koda loves the warmth of Keelo’s fur, and the latter clearly loves how he’s able to make his tiny friend feel cozy and safe.
Since Koda clearly feels right at home with Keelo, she also refuses to leave him alone. The Golden Retriever sometimes retreats to a higher surface in hopes of maybe getting some peace and quiet, but Koda is just not having it.
For Koda, it’s an excuse to play. She would always attempt to jump up and land on the same surface but would end up failing each time.
As time passes, Koda’s playfulness intensifies, but Keelo’s patience remains the same.
Being the older sibling, Keelo longs for uninterrupted naps. Unfortunately, Koda doesn’t make that possible. She’s always on his case, trying to wake him up, as if to convince him that it would be much more fun to play. As you watch the video, you’ll be surprised to see how quickly Koda has grown.
From a teeny-tiny kitten to a bigger cat, Koda’s physique may have changed slightly but her ever eager, playful nature remains the same.
You’ll also catch Keelo finally relenting – the Golden Retriever humors the cat by playing along.
Despite the difference in Koda’s size, she still insists on settling in the same spot for nap time – Keelo’s shoulder. And what does the Golden Retriever do?
He spreads his legs a little wider to make sure his feline friend has enough room to nap comfortably.
Keelo senses that Koda isn’t as fragile as she used to be, given her size and her antics. So he eagerly lets loose and becomes more playful with her, too. Towards the end of the video montage, you’ll see that Keelo initiates playtime more.
As Koda grows, play time becomes more fun for them both. Growing together has truly cemented their relationship.
