This story warms my heart.

Pets of all shapes and sizes can bring so much joy into our lives. Whether it’s a fluffy little hamster, a loyal dog, or something else altogether, these wonderful animals have an innate ability to make us happy. Unfortunately, it’s a sad fact that so many pets end up abandoned or neglected.

Many people take pets without thinking about the full responsibilities of owning and looking after them, while others just have to give them up for one reason or another. Many abandoned pets end up in shelters, desperately awaiting their ‘forever home’, and some have to wait a very long time.

Because of their age, appearance, health problems, or other issues, some shelter animals really struggle to get adopted. Fortunately, however, there are some wonderful people out there willing to give these furry friends a second chance. People like this lady.

The woman, named Leslie, stepped through the doors of the Asheville Humane Society and said:

Which two dogs have been here the longest, with the most special needs? I’m here to take them both home with me.

The staff of the shelter was simply blown away by Leslie’s demand, sharing a Facebook post to tell the whole story and saying it had been “the kind of day that every person who works in an animal shelter dreams about”.

The workers knew exactly which two dogs would be right for Leslie. They introduced her to Brutus and Sam.

Brutus suffers from severe separation anxiety, meaning that he really panics if his owner leaves him alone for too long, while Sam has serious medical problems. Brutus had originally been set for euthanasia before being saved by the society, while Sam had been adopted once before but was returned quite quickly afterward.

The AHS workers had vowed to somehow, someday find a home for both Brutus and Sam, but they knew the chances were slim.

Many people who visit animal shelters prefer to take dogs without medical or behavioral problems, and a lot of the older dogs often get left behind as well.

But then Leslie arrived and made their dreams come true. The workers were so thrilled they decided to record the special moment and share the video on their Facebook page.

The video shows the shelter workers gathering around and smiling happily as Brutus and Sam climb into Leslie’s car and get ready for the next stage of their lives.

Leslie, clearly emotional, talks about how these kinds of animals deserve love and happiness at the ends of their lives. She also tells a touching story of how her family recently lost seven older pets that they’d adopted and how deeply the losses had affected her daughters while vowing to continue saving overlooked and unwanted animals and giving them all the love and care they need.

A truly inspiring woman and an example for all of us, Leslie clearly has a heart of gold and we’re sure Brutus and Sam will be very happy with her.
