“Inside Edition”… the title makes it sound like a show that delves into the important stories of our day.

They say claim to feature “uplifting news, investigations” as well as “news and politics.”

You’d think ” television’s longest-running, top-rated, and most-honored syndicated newsmagazine” would feature deep investigations into things that need changing in our world like climate change, income inequality, and poverty.

However, one of it’s more recent videos is titled “Kid Hides From Cops in Trash Can Full of Baby Diapers.”

You’d think a show with such power and influence would delve into the important discussion of why such a young child in America would find himself having to steal at all and run from the police.

It seems like it would be a good opportunity to discuss the 15 million children, or 21 percent of all children in the U.S., who live in poverty. Or discuss topics like what emotional issue cause children to steal and how they can be curbed.

However, the “news” outlet took a different route with this story. It started with “Catch that kid!”

They told a lighthearted story about a child thief who hid in a trash can of hot diapers for his crimes.

“A young man in Oregon jumped into a trash can in a last-ditch effort to hide from police and it was all captured on a neighbor’s home security camera,” the video’s caption reads.

“In the video, the kid, fleeing a cop, leaps into the garbage, pulling the lid over himself. It was a scorching 90 degrees outside, but the kid sat in the trash can for 30 minutes, at which point he peaked out and hopped from the can once the coast was clear. At first, he casually walked away, then he took off.”

An Oregon homeowner captured the footage on his home security camera and told Inside Edition that he thought the child was playing hide-and-seek at first.

“I saw him jump out and I go “That’s a really gross spot to play hide and seek’ because that’s what I thought was going on,” the homeowner said.

But after watching the tape a little while longer he saw a police officer walk right by the trash can.

“Which way did that kid run,” the panting officer asked.

The officer then walks off in another direction. The 14-year-old then waited in the trash can filled with diapers and used kitty litter for about a half-hour after that.

“You can smell it when it’s hot and full like that. You walk by 10-feet away and you can get a little whiff of it,” the homeowner said.

The kid eventually jumped out and fled.

Inside Edition said that he was caught about an hour later for what the show’s announcer said in an accusatory and stern manner was theft.

People on YouTube, actual Americans, were a lot more forgiving than Inside Edition.

“I would’ve gave that kid a ice cream if I knew he hid in literal feces for 30 minutes in hot weather and that smell must of sucked hard,” one person said.

“Honestly that has to be the coolest kid ever .. regardless of what he did wrong you have to admit that was a pretty nice move,” said another.

Hopefully, the police officers were just as forgiving as these YouTubers and helped this boy get on the right track and get him all the things that he needs so he doesn’t have to steal anymore.
