Each day there’s a risk of becoming the victim, simply by doing everyday activities like going to the store or relaxing in our living rooms.

Keeping Safe While Out Shopping

Running to the store is such a common task that a lot of us do it throughout the week without a second thought. But what not everyone does is take precautions before stepping inside.

If you carry a purse, likely you’ve tossed it into the baby section of a shopping cart at some point. While it’s a convenient spot – it also makes you an easy target for a “snatch and grab.”

Officer Perry, who’s a safety instructor, explained to FOX 4 News how placing your purse in this section of the cart is not a good idea. If a person does take your purse – then all of a sudden they have your credit cards, keys, and even know where you live because of your license.

What should you do instead?

When walking to your car, wear your strapped pocketbook in front of you and have your keys in your hands. Also, don’t have your cell phone out, as it’s a distraction.

Another suggestion the officer has is to try and park by the cart caddy during the day. Since it’s an area with higher traffic, that makes it a safer area to be in.

Important Home Safety Tips

Driving into the garage seems like a harmless activity, but you never know if someone is lurking about. Officer Perry suggested to FOX 4 that you keep your mirrors pointed at the ground while pulling in. This way, you’ll be able to see if someone is trying to sneak around near the tires.

Do you keep a rod in your sliding glass door?

A lot of us will put a stick in the track of our sliding glass doors as an extra safety measure. This adds some protection, as long as the stick is full-length and solid.

In the video, the officer describes how one could actually lift the rod up from the track if it’s too short or hollow. It’s a truth that not everyone knows about.

What if someone comes knocking at your front door?

Officer Perry says that you can “acknowledge you’re home, but stand away.” She explained in detail,

“Sometimes if you don’t have that extra strip out there on the door, sometimes they can actually see through there. They can see that shadow – they can see exactly where you are.”

What could happen is that if the person kicks the door open, it will go right in your face and the handle possibly in your pelvic area.

Officer Perry shows everyone how this could happen. It’s very eye-opening to see up close, as many of us have probably stood in front of our doors and shouted, “who is it?” thinking we were being precautious enough.
