There are countless people who think very highly of Judge Caprio and have even dubbed him the ‘nicest judge in the world.’
This could be because he tends to always see the good in people and wants to help those who are struggling. On his popular TV show, ‘Caught in Providence‘ “Judge Caprio has said, “Sometimes the circumstances of a case are so heartbreaking that the only thing my conscience will allow me to do is use my position as a judge to ease their burden.”
As the Chief Municipal Judge in Providence, Rhode Island, and former Chairman of the Rhode Island Board of Governors, Judge Caprio serves the public with humility and understanding.
On one episode of Caught in Providence, Judge Caprio is pleasantly surprised when the defendant’s mother brings up his father. She tells the judge that his father used to deliver milk to her grandmother. Her daughter chimes in to add to the story.
“My grandmother used to say, God rest her soul, that if you ever go in front of Judge Caprio, please tell him that his dad’s nickname was ‘tupatoffey.’ – caughtinprovidence.com
At the mention of his father, Judge Caprio starts to smile and is speechless for a few seconds.
He goes on to tell the two women how much it meant that they brought up his father. You can tell by his expression that his father was a role model in his life and he has very fond memories of him.
“You know you’ve made my day…I want to explain something, my dad was an immigrant, he came from Italy, he was a fruit peddler…and subsequently, he became a milkman. His nickname as your daughter indicated was ‘tupatoffee’ that’s because when he was peddling fruit one day his face was so frozen that he couldn’t order a cup of coffee in the restaurant and he said, ‘give me a tup a toffee’ because his face was frozen. So that became his nickname for the rest of his life.” – Judge Caprio
A wonderful man and father.
Judge Caprio continues to tell the story about how his dad was ordered by the company to stop delivering milk to families who were two weeks behind on their payment. Judge Caprio tells the courtroom that his father told him that if there were kids in the house, he would never stop the milk deliveries. He kept his promise.
“He would take money out of his pocket and say they made a partial payment…but when there were kids involved…I’m getting emotional about it…he never stopped.” – Judge Caprio
The mother of the defendant tells Judge Caprio that his father was a wonderful man and you can see him getting misty-eyed as he reflects on his father’s character.
We can tell that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Judge Caprio’s selfless nature is much like his father’s and people respect him for it.
