Who doesn’t love free money?
We always hear those distant dreamy stories – the couple who found a suitcase full of cash during a home reno. Someone who dug up one of Escobar’s secret stashes of hidden drug money on his farm. And we’re all too familiar with the pang of jealousy that hits anytime you hear about someone in your region winning the lottery.
Well, we’ve got another one for you.
This couple got a very unexpected surprise going through a McDonald’s drive-thru.
Most people don’t go through the contents of their order until they’ve pulled away. So the Terry family didn’t realize what had happened until they got back on the road in Tennessee.
When they reached in for their breakfast order, they were beside themselves.
Instead of the usual burger and fries, they opened the bag to find cold hard cash.
And not just a couple bucks… but thousands of dollars.
How did a bag of money make its way to the drive-thru exactly? It turns out, it was supposed to be a drop to the bank. But during the busy breakfast rush, it somehow found its way into the line of food orders.
When the Terrys realized what had happened they were faced with two choices.
One, was to take the money and run.
Who could have tracked them down? They were essentially anonymous at the McDonald’s drive-thru, and they hadn’t intentionally taken the money. It wasn’t their mistake to correct.
The other, was to turn around and make sure the stack of money made it back to its rightful owner.
Many would have shrugged and gone with the first option. Driving off into the sunset a few thousand dollars richer. But not the Terrys!
These honest people have hearts of gold and never even considered the second option. They knew they had to return the money as soon as possible.
But before they’d even left the parking lot, an employee came running after their car.
Visibly distraught, she explained that the money was intended to be a money drop and was supposed to be sent to the bank.
“The second that he said it was their deposit, my first thing was ‘get in the car, let’s take it back’. You know, there’s no other way to have it, I couldn’t live with myself with that.” – Stacey Terry.
They gave the money back immediately and saved the day.
The employee(s) who accidentally sent that cash out the window could have been in quite a lot of trouble if they hadn’t!
McDonald’s issued a public statement to thank the family for being so honest.
“We are grateful for this customer and the action they took upon realizing our error. We are looking into why this mistake happened, but what is most important to us is knowing that we are part of a community with values that were evidenced by this person’s actions.”
The Terrys made it clear they believe it was an honest mistake and could have happened to anybody. They don’t want any of the employees to lose their jobs over the incident, and they’re just happy they were able to give it back.
Now that it’s over, both the couple and McDonald’s can laugh about it.
And the Terrys have had their good deed shared nation-wide!
Many commenters were shocked that the family chose to give it back… which just goes to show that not everyone would have been so honest!
“Boy my damn foot would of went through the floor of my truck had it been me. ” – Brae Jefe
“I would have kept it as compensation for all of my orders they messed up and for never having a working ice cream machine.” – Ethan Hall
