I wish I knew how to do this sooner!

While some of us dread having to bust out our iron, you don’t have to make an extreme sport of it. Unless you want to that is.

Yes, extreme ironing is actually a thing.

Some people “extreme iron” for fun or for an adrenaline rush. Extreme ironing brings ironing outdoors and is sometimes combined with other extreme sports like rock climbing, skiing, scuba or sky diving.

I SWEAR I am not lying to you… it’s a thing. It’s basically people ironing in weird or dangerous circumstances. So, picture ironing on top of a car that’s moving or ironing underwater.

People actual compete and set records for extreme ironing. It’s weird, but… whatever floats your boat.

For those of us non-thrill seekers who just want our shirt pressed, there is a right way and a wrong way to do it.

Here’s how to properly iron a shirt:

Step 1) The best time to iron your shirt is when it’s freshly washed and slightly damp. But if your shirt is completely dry you can spritz it with a spray bottle of water to dampen it again. You can also use the steam setting on your iron.

Make sure your iron is on the correct setting for the fabric of the shirt. So if your shirt is cotton, put it on the cotton setting. Give your iron time to heat up properly.

Step 2) Start with ironing your collar from the outside in. If you iron from the inside out, it will curve up the edges.

Step 3) Iron the inside of your cuff from the outside in and then iron the other side of the cuff the same way.

Step 4) Fold your cuffs over and press them together so that the corner runs in-line with the arm.

Step 5) Next, start on the yoke of the shirt, a.k.a. the part the covers the back of your shoulders. Fit this area over the ironing board and, again, iron from the outside inward and press down over any creases. Iron the back of your shirt with lots of steam to get the creases out.

Step 6) Flip your shirt over and press down over the area where your button holes are. Do the same on the opposite side of your shirt and use the tip of your iron to get in between the buttons.

Step 7) Lay your sleeves out on the board and make sure its completely flat before you start pressing it. Repeat on the opposite side.
