In 2018, singer/songwriter Lady Gaga stunned everyone when she appeared as her natural self sans makeup and colorful wig in the movie A Star Is Born. Lady Gaga co-starred with actor Bradley Cooper in the hit movie; even he shocked everyone with the fact that he can actually sing.
In the movie, seasoned musician Jackson Maine, played by Bradley, falls in love with a struggling artist named Ally, portrayed by Lady Gaga. She has just about given up on her dream to make it big as a singer until Jackson draws her into the spotlight. But as Ally’s career takes off, their relationship breaks down.
The main track from the movie, “Shallow (A Star Is Born)” was the choice of music for Dublin singer Alana Fox who is auditioning on Ireland’s Got Talent. It’s surely daunting to stand there all alone on the stage, an auditorium packed full of people staring at you and a panel of judges critiquing every aspect of your performance.
But with her jet-black hair and bright orange jacket, Alana confidently walks out on the stage prepared to do her very best. She has no idea that her planned performance will blow away the judges instead.
The 19-year-old performing arts educator teaches singing, dancing and acting. She auditioned on X Factor as part of a band and judge Simon Cowell was their mentor, she shared.
But now, she’s appearing all alone for this audition and her nerves are eating away at her.
Alana visibly takes a deep breath, then begins pouring passion into her rendition of Lady Gaga’s song “Shallow (A Star Is Born).” The song is riddled with passionate power and Alana hits each emotion.
When she nears the chorus, Alana begins really belting it out and one judge shakes his head in disbelief at what he’s hearing.
“Tell me something, boy. Aren’t you tired tryin’ to fill that void? Or do you need more? Ain’t it hard keeping it so hardcore? I’m falling. In all the good times I find myself. Longing for change and in the bad times I fear myself. I’m off the deep end, watch as I dive in I’ll never meet the ground. Crash through the surface, where they can’t hurt us. We’re far from the shallow now. In the shallow, shallow…In the shallow, shallow…In the shallow, shallow…We’re far from the shallow now.”
Partway through her audition, the audience wildly applauds Alana’s performance, catching her off guard. One judge even sings along! Alana gains confidence and shakes off the nerves, wrapping up her performance with such power and grace that she surely will be passed on to the next round.
When she’s all done, Alana exhales a puff of nervous pent-up air and much to her surprise, she’s rewarded with a standing ovation from both the judges and the audience. Her reaction is priceless.
