As a parent, you just want the best for your child. So when illnesses like measles are actively getting people sick, we tend to panic a little. Measles technically was eradicated from the United States in 2000, but anti-vaxxers are causing an outbreak in Washington and Oregon. For one mother, a simple question turned into some harsh words from unrelenting internet trolls.

They took it to a whole new level with this one, scroll down!

This mom asked how to keep her child safe from measles, the internet wasn’t kind to her.

In this day and age, everything you say or do on the internet can be magnified and replayed. When this worried mother asked for advice for her 3-year-old, I’m sure she never expected this type of response after she posted:

“My 3 year old is not vaccinated and there is currently a measles outbreak in my state. Any suggestions for precautions i can take to protect her would be very much appreciated.”

The Twitter account Richard Dawkins Foundations for Reasons & Science posted a screenshot with her named scribbled out and it quickly blew up. The screenshot was captioned:

“Can anyone guess how this person could protect their child from measles?”

I understand it’s not the brightest question, but some people took it way too far.

We’ve all said and done things, that in hindsight may not be the brightest. Does that warrant being attacked by a bunch of internet trolls? Unfortunately, nowadays, it’s a real problem. People mercilessly threw daggers in the form of words at the young mother.

“Measles is not the biggest threat to your child. A parent who gets their medical advice from Facebook is.” Said one tweeter.

People were most angry about the fact that anti-vaxxers are putting everyone at risk.

It’s understandable to be upset with anti-vaxxers, but attacking them over the internet might not be the most effective strategy. Some of the tweeters were more sarcastic, @TorchyBlaine said:

“First you’ve got to find a willow tree. The tree must be at least 47 years old. Then you cut a new branch off the tree. You hang it over the kid’s bed, facing SSE. And (the most important bit) you must hang it with a *red* ribbon.”

The outbreak started in Washington and spread to Oregon due to anti-vaxx propaganda leading to some declining the vaccination.

It’s scary to think that measles could continue to spread because people refuse to get the vaccination. I would hate to see more people getting sick, or even possibly dying from a very treatable condition that has no place in modern societies. Hopefully, the backlash from the internet will get this young mother and others like her to get the vaccination that could end up saving their child’s life!
