Banner the husky is a wonderful service dog with a heart of gold.
The three-year-old dog has been helping Whitney Braley with a wide variety of tasks.
“She alerts to PTSD episodes, anxiety attacks, migraines, guidework, momentum pull, medication retrival, self harm interruption, and a few more.” Whitney told Bored Panda.
The pair rescues a lot of animals together, and Braley noticed that she gets very attached to kittens. Just two years ago, Braley had to bottlefeed a kitten who had fallen into a ditch. Banner raised the kitten herself as a foster mother. That particular cat still lives with the family and Banner ended up fostering 10 different litters of kittens over the years.
Banner was in the woods when she found a sealed cardboard box with seven newborn kittens inside.
These kittens were so young their eyes hadn’t opened yet. They were very little and had no way to stay warm, so they were slowly freezing in the box. Since the box was sealed, this meant somebody must have put the kittens in there and sealed the box before purposefully leaving them in the woods.
Banner immediately alerted Braley and led her into the woods to the box. Braley opened the box as quickly as she could and Banner took carefully took the kittens out of the box one by one.
Braley didn’t waste any time taking these kittens into her home to warm them up and feed them. Soon the little ones were moving around on their own and behaving like normal. The whole time, Banner didn’t leave their side. It was probably at this moment Banner decided to be a foster mom.
Since finding them, Banner hasn’t left the kittens’ side.
Banner was spayed at 1.5 years old but still has a very strong maternal instinct. Taking care of the kittens has made Banner very happy, and the kittens have a wonderful mom to take care of them until they are adopted by other families.
“Our local shelter kills in three days, so it’s best if I do it myself,” Whitney said.
Braley intends on raising the kittens herself until they find a forever home. The local animal shelter has a kill policy so she doesn’t want to risk their lives by handing them over.
In the meantime, Banner has a litter to raise.
Banner seems very happy with her new litter of kittens. She brings the little ones out on picnics and cuddles them in a bed to keep them warm at night. She is very pleased with how her babies are recovering from their time in the woods and she looks forward to seeing them find their own forever homes.
