We have all heard of animals that play dead but usually as a trick or as a defense mechanism. Opossums, for example, will immediately fall to the ground and appear comatose in order to send a clear message to the threatening person or animal not to bother with them. The message they are trying to send is that they’re already dead. Some people teach their dogs this trick, but it is rare to see a horse lay down and play dead. But this one does! His name is Jingang and he is the most dramatic horse you have ever seen.
The horse will play dead at the sight of a human.
Watching this horse dramatically fall to the ground is hilarious. His owner put together a compilation of the horse acting up. Jingang, sometimes even just when his owner is walking next to him, will quickly fall to the ground and lays his head down in the dirt. He will even go so far as to throw a stiff leg up in the air and stick his tongue out as if he has passed away.
Sometimes though, Jingang will forget to close his eyes, giving away his teasing antic. Jingang will then look around to see if anyone is near him. If his owner calls out his name, Jingang will quickly throw himself back down and continue to play dead.
The horse’s owners do find it somewhat amusing.
I am sure the first time that Jingang figured out all he had to do was lay down and not have to work, the ranch owners probably thought the stunt was hilarious. But the humor would wear off quickly if there was work that needs to be done. And Jingang knows that.
“It’s cute, but naughty,” explains his owner.
It is impossible to ride on a horse that is laying down and since they are such large creatures, there is not a whole lot that can be done. One cannot just pick up a horse and keep him standing upright for long. So, clever Jingang has figured out the perfect secret of avoiding work: just lay down and play dead.
The owners try to no avail by begging the horse to cooperate,”Quit it and get up now!”
Jingang works on a ranch and will do anything to avoid work.
A normal ranch horse will carry around its rider while they attend to various chores. They often herd cattle or help pull heavy equipment. But at some point, Jingang just had enough of this ranching business. He decided he didn’t want to carry people around anymore and refuses to do any more work.
We don’t know if this was something that Jingang figured out how to do on his own, or if he was trained at some point. But either way, it is a hilarious spectacle and hopefully his antics do not rub off on his other fellow horses. Otherwise this ranch is in big trouble!
