A wedding is the happiest day of a young couple’s life – or at least it should be, anyway. A wedding is a day for celebration, joy, and coming together. It is a time where a new couple can display their love for all to see, and it is the official beginning of their life together.
Obviously, weddings are a BIG DEAL. Many brides-to-be expect this day to be absolutely perfect, and that does not happen without an immense amount of planning. There is simply so much to do, from picking a venue, to selecting the perfect dress, to hammering out the details of the guests and the food.
It is completely understandable that any future bride would be stressed when planning a wedding, but how she handles that stress says a lot about her as a person and how successful her marriage will be.
Often times the wedding is a big indication of where the couple is at romantically. Economics professors Andrew Francis-Tan and Hugo M Mialon conducted a study in which they surveyed 3,000 married people, and their discovery was certainly alarming.
According to their research, couples who spend exorbitant amounts of money on engagement rings and wedding days are actually more likely to divorce. How could this be? It might seem that if a couple were willing to drop some serious cash for their wedding, they would be super serious about each other. Unfortunately, that often isn’t the case.
As it turns out, people who spend this much on their wedding day tend to have more shallow reasons for getting married, as do people who admit that looks factored into their decision to elope. When true love isn’t fueling the fire, it will soon die out. Unfortunately for this selfish bride-to-be, the wedding was literally over before it began.
The whole mess started in the beginning stages of the wedding planning. This woman’s anonymous wedding planner shared her horror story on Not Always Right, a page where customer-service workers can dish on their nightmare experiences. This is one story that will definitely confirm your belief in karma.
The future bride and her sister – who was also supposed to be her bridesmaid – were having it out in the wedding planner’s office in the early stages of preparing for this event. The sister had gotten pregnant, and the bridezilla could not handle it.
Rather than being happy for her sister and the new family she was starting, this bridezilla threw a huge fit because the bridesmaid’s dress would have to be altered. The two were shouting so loudly that the wedding planner could hear them from the other room where she was hiding. Then, after an eternity of silence, the sister spoke up.
“We’ve been trying for three years. While the wedding may be your day, you knew what I was going through to get the chance to have a baby.”
This likely would have been enough for any ordinary person to back down. A family is a special thing, and a child will certainly last longer than a marriage ceremony. This bride-to-be, however, was not your average person. In fact, she was nowhere close.
“Well, then, I guess you can’t be in my wedding, because I don’t want to deal with the problems your pregnancy will cause,” she spat at HER OWN SISTER. I mean, really, who does that?!
The sister walked off without saying a word. The wedding planner was absolutely disgusted with what she had just witnessed, but she had a job to do. She put on her best poker face and continued with the preparations.
It wasn’t until a few months later when the problem popped up again. This time the bridezilla and her mom were in a meeting with the wedding planner. Everything seemed to be going smoothly until the mom got a phone call. She stepped out of the room and answered her cell. When she returned, it was obvious she had been crying.
The bridezilla asked who had called, and the mom replied in what few words she could muster. “Your sister…she lost the baby.”
The wedding planner’s heart plummeted as she realized what tragedy this family was facing. “My heart breaks for them,” the planner shared in her post. “There is nothing I can say to take the pain away, and there are not enough tissues in the world to mop up my sympathetic tears that are about to come to the surface.”
You would think everyone in the room would feel the heavy sorrow of the devastating event, but nope! Bridezilla had an entirely different way to react. Her audacity truly knows no bounds.
“Oh. Well, I guess she can be in my wedding, then, since she’s not pregnant anymore.”
Excuse me?! That is NOT OKAY! This is one cold-hearted woman.
At this point, the wedding planner was having a hard time holding back her outrage. The mom, on the other hand, was not even trying to hide her absolute revulsion.
The planner stood in silence as the scene unfolded. “I have never seen something snap behind another person’s eyes before,” she wrote. “It’s absolutely terrifying! [Bridezilla’s Mom] turns to me and speaks in this deadly soft, deadly calm voice:
“I’m so sorry to have wasted your time, but it looks as though I won’t be financing the wedding anymore. It looks like my daughter will be taking over paying for everything. I hope this doesn’t cause your business any trouble.”
You go mom! No one should have to put up with her daughter acting like a spoiled brat. This is not what celebration and family coming together are about.
The bridezilla was instantly horrified. She started to panic, and the only question she could get out was, “Mom?!”
The wedding planner didn’t even try to hide her smile as she told the woman that she understood. She informed her previous customer that she was sure they could work it all out. The day went on, but less than 24 hours later the planner got a call.
Apparently, when the groom heard about how awful his bride-to-be was, he called off the wedding. Living with such a heartless witch was just too much for him, so he backed out while he still could.
I hope this bridezilla learned a valuable lesson. A wedding may be about starting a new family, but it is also about being with our loved ones. No celebration is worth-while without family to enjoy it with.
There was no happy ending at the end of this chapter, but hopefully, this woman will change her tune. Love and compassion are what make life worth living. At least the would-be groom was smart enough to know that.
Life may not always turn out exactly the way we planned, but we have to be grateful for those who care about us. When we give more love, we get more love, and we make the world a better place.
