The fairy-tale โ€œGoldilocks and the Three Bearsโ€ first taught us about the importance of having a comfortable bed. If the mattress is too hard or too soft, weโ€™re much more likely to spend the night tossing and turning. Different people have different preferences when it comes to beds, with peopleโ€™s ideal mattresses depending on weight, age, and other factors.

Is there a reason why we sleep better in our own bed?

This is a question that probably springs to mind when youโ€™re wide awake in a hotel room at 2 a.m. A lack of sleep is never a great feeling, and it causes snappiness, forgetfulness, and an inability to properly concentrate.

Our bodyโ€™s logic behind those restless nights in hotels is called the โ€œfirst-night effectโ€ and is something that has been passed down genetically from our ancestors.

Apparently, our alertness in unfamiliar places was a skill developed by our ancestors when traveling to new areas. As they were unfamiliar with the place that they were sleeping in, it was important for them to always maintain slight alertness in case they needed to make a quick getaway. Deseret.com says:

โ€œWhile the first-night effect can be useful if you and your family are spending a night on the savannah, it can make for a poor start to a long-awaited vacation by making you start the trip tired.โ€

Itโ€™s not just humans who have this skill! Do you ever wonder why your dog or cat sleeps with one ear back? Well hereโ€™s your answer.

Just like us humans, dogs value a good nightโ€™s sleep. One dog in particular knows exactly how to get comfortable, and he doesnโ€™t take too kindly to his owner interrupting his plans for a great nap.

Henry the Great Dane is often called โ€œgrumpyโ€ by his owners โ€” and he doesnโ€™t take too well to his mom and dad playing practical jokes on him.

On this occasion, Henryโ€™s dad decides to lay in his dog bed.

Great Danes can grow up to 200 lbs, so the bed is actually a pretty decent size for Henryโ€™s dad to snuggle up in. He just has to tuck his knees up to his chest and then heโ€™s fitting perfectly! Naturally, the sight of a grown man taking a kip in a dogโ€™s bed is hilarious โ€” but Henry doesnโ€™t think so!

Once he came to inspect his bed, he was NOT happy.

At first, Henry believes that it must all just be one big misunderstanding. Heโ€™s seen his dadโ€™s bed before and thereโ€™s no way heโ€™d choose to stay in Henryโ€™s bed instead โ€” would he? Perhaps Henry should wake up his dad just to alert him to the fact that heโ€™s got into the wrong bed.

Henry puts a paw onto his dadโ€™s shoulder โ€” but his dad still doesnโ€™t move!

After realizing that his dad isnโ€™t going to move, Henry begins to get exasperated. His owner is sleeping in his favorite and only bed โ€” and this means war!

Henry huffs and puffs to show his irritation, and he even uses his head to try and push his owner out of the bed. Why wonโ€™t he wake up?!

At that moment, Henryโ€™s owner has decided that heโ€™s put his dog through enough torment. He sits up, laughing, and begins to pet the pup. As soon as Henry realizes that it was all a big joke, he instantly relaxes and enjoys the attention from his dad. Heโ€™s just happy to have his bed back!
