Get excited people because one of your favorite childhood movies is coming back to theaters.
Before High School Musical, there was Grease.
A tale of two star-crossed lovers trying to come together in the face of high school cliques and their own identities while singing the catchiest of songs. The 1978 American musical comedy will be making its way back to the silver screen in honor of the film’s 40th anniversary (does that make you feel old or what?!).
We know what you’re thinking…
The first thing you need to know is that they aren’t re-making the movie. It’s the original film that returning to theaters.
So, you don’t have to worry about them ruining the sanctity of the film.
But you will get all your favorite song and dance numbers and your favorite characters, like a handsome 23-year-old John Travolta as Danny Zuko the head of the greaser pack. It’s fantastic that new generations will get to experience the glory and wonder of Grease.
But you may want to leave your littlest ones at home as what was considered OK for kids then probably wouldn’t be considered appropriate for kids these days by some (ie: premarital sex, teen pregnancy, and dropping the F-bomb in Italian).
Ya know, some of the reasons we love this movie so much!
“Whether you’ve seen it dozens of times and know the words to every song, or you’re in for the rare treat of seeing it for the first time, watching Grease on the big screen with an audience is an unforgettable experience that we’re delighted to offer movie lovers,” Tom Lucas, Fathom Events Vice President of Studio Relations, told Entertainment Weekly.
According to TimeOut, the film will be released in 700 theatres across the U.S. for two days only on Sunday, April 8 and Wednesday, April 11 at 2 p.m.and 7 p.m.
Those attending will also get to see a special commentary pre and post movie screening with Turner Classic Movies’ Primetime host Ben Mankiewicz.
The re-release of the movie is part of the Turner Classic Movies Big Screen Classics series, which brings classic movies to theatres for limited showings, and is presented by Fathom Events and Paramount Pictures. We are so excited that we could just jump up on the bed and sing and dance.
So you better shape up, grab your fellow Pink Ladies and get yourself a ticket before they are all sold out. You can find a participating theatre and purchase your tickets now here.
The 40th anniversary will also be honored with a release of a special edition Blu-ray/DVD on April 24.
People online are basically freaking out because they are so excited.
“Yep, still one of my faves. When it hit theaters in 1978, I saw it 10 times in the theater,” said one commenter on Facebook.
“I got chills, they’re multiplying,” said another.
And as if this news wasn’t amazing enough, we may also be in for a grease reunion.
According to Express, both Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, who of course played Sandy, said that the wheels are turning when it comes to thinking about how to reunite Sandy and Danny.
“We are thinking up ways. Nothing to announce yet,” Newtown-John told them. “Forty years anniversary of Grease, which I can’t believe.”
So, we’ll just have to wait and see about that.
In the meantime, we’ll be snagging tickets to the re-release of the original.
